Went out this morning till 11:30. Saw 7. Got within 100 yards of a group feeding in a hay field at first light, tucked into a blow down on the edge and hoped they fed my way as I won't shoot that far. That plan didn't work, lol.

Great you're getting out and seeing deer! I will take a 100 yd shot but would have to be perfect conditions. Longest smoker kill for me was 105 yds but most 75 yds or less.

I practice at the range at 100 yards with my flintlock rifles all the time. A clear shot off of a supported position and I will take it every time.

So my streak of poor shooting continues. Snuck onto the edge of a hay field in gray light and could out a few does in it but they fed away from me. Decided to sit in a little saddle on a ridge, hoping that there would be some guys pushing down low. got settled in there by 7:30 and about 8, three quads go tearing up through another hay field so I figured some drives were about to happen. Found their channel on my radio and the drove most of the morning. At 10:00, caught three does working their way up to me. When the lead doe stopped at about 60 yards, I focused on Loggy's long range shooting school instructions and squeezed it off. No hair, no blood, no nothing. Followed their trail for about 100 yards and nothing.
Oh well, wasn't too disappointed as I have three tags punched already.
This farm is open to hunting to anybody that asks and has quite a bit of deer, but I have no idea how the landowner tolerates people unloaded quads and UTVs and roaring through his fields on them.

Put a Lyman #66 peep sight on it. You will focus more on the sight than the flash.

I haven't shot a counter in a while, but, I always had to force myself to follow thru. Just like with shooting a bow, with a counter, you need to hold and follow thru. Made me a better shot. Also, don't shoot off a bench, shoot from a post or bipod, like you would when hunting

Every year I say I am gonna dedicate some time to practice with the flintlock and every year I don't do it. When I think about the number of deer I have missed, it pretty pathetic. Usually by flintlock I have a deer or two in the freezer so it doesn't break my heart too bad to not have to drag another one out of the woods. Since all of the guys I used to flintlock hunt with have hung it up for some reason, I am generally out there by myself and do enjoy the solitude of the late season. Being out there and seeing a deer is reward enough for me I guess which is why I haven't spent the time I should practicing.

The unexplainable does happens Ridge...even to me using my "follow through" pointer!! I just got back from 3 days up at my Sullivan County Camp. I didn't fire a shot or even see a deer. Least you're seeing deer!! The 3 areas I like hunting had almost 2' snow on their unopened access roads. DCNR didn't even have the roads open to areas of the Loyalsock SF areas I like hunting. Tried SGL 134 above Hillsgrove....same thing untravelable roads. I did bring the Mrs 2 bottles of wine from Pappy Jack's Winery just above my camp as evidence I was up there!! lol Oh well I'm done.......Spring Gobbler & flounder just around the corner.

Saw 10 deer on my 4 hr. hike in Washington County Saturday morning. Shouldered the rifle 5 times and killed 1 tree. Damn deer just won't co-operate.

Shooting a flintlock requires the same degree of dedication as shooting a bow, like Dutch said follow through. Back in the late 1970’s when I was shooting matches every week I could usually hit what I was aiming at. No I never made it to Friendship Indian, but got to the point where I could at lease place in a match now and then.
