I've been working on my Leman style flintlock build. I've purchased a Green Mt. 1-66 twist in .54 caliber. I'm really taking my time on this one and I doubt if it will be ready for this fall, but that's NBD as I have my "trusty" T\C flinter that I rebarreled with a .50 caliber Green Mt. barrel. (Best $$$ ever put into a T\C flinter) Anyway, I'm working on the butt plate for now. I'll post pic's as the project proceeds!!

Did a little more today. Done for the day. Rasping is a four letter word!! And I can't do it all at once.

I had a complete "brain collapse" when I did the tang inletting. I thought I had the barrel in the channel, and then marked the tang with my exacto knife for the correct position. But.....I did not double check for the rear of the tang to be center. Yeah...... Anyway: Initial epoxy of piece to fix screw up: Preliminary fix to square tang in stock. Adjust\file the tang to fit into mortise. I'm not to concerned about hiding the epoxy line at this point. I think with the intended stain, and maybe a little artist brush I can make this flow right in with the wood grain. The next step is to inlet the lock plate, and then triggers, then trigger guard. The lock plate will take some time as I want a good wood to metal fit. Well, I wanted that with the tang too......but just forget ONE little step........

I have the buttplate all inletted. I also drilled the screw holes, but have not yet chamfered 'em. As you can see from the pic, I have some rasping on the wood to do.

Well, I have the forestock side plates at an acceptable height. A little more than half the barrel's side panel is showing on both sides. Next, I think I'll work on lock plate placement. Here's a pic:

Looks great! I could never do one myself. Just don't have the patience and know I would rush it and screw it up.

Looks great! I could never do one myself. Just don't have the patience and know I would rush it and screw it up. Well, first....thanks for your encouragement! Second.....Yeah....I hear ya. My first flintlock build was my pistol. I now look at my pistol and see many mistakes I've made. On this rifle I'm taking each step of the build and focusing on just that step. I doubt I'll have the rifle ready for this fall, but that doesn't matter as I have a T\C 50 cal for hunting. I plan on doing some "ginger bread" on this one.....which I know will take additional time.

I measured, re-measured, and measured and marked the stock last evening in order to do the inletting. I posted a pic on the M\L builders forum and two guys stated that the lock looked "to far forward". I said.....ghee.....it quadruple check it. So, this am with fresh eyes.....and a clear mind.....I measured it once more. They were right!! I was 1/8" to far forward. I got it right today. Started the inletting.......I'm farther along that this.....but now getting tired and time to stop before I get it wrong!! BTW, this is just the lock plate bolster. When I get it deep 'nuff I'll outline and inlet the plate.

It looks like you will soon be takin orders them Ha!! Again, thanks for the words of encouragement, but I don't need that kind of pressure. Besides, a trip to trout fish in Co. could just pop up and there goes another two weeks of not building.

BTW & FWIW, at first look, the inlet on the trigger plate appears "bad." The pic makes it appear that there is a large gap that runs all the way around the plate. In fact, what that black stuff is....is "Transfer paint." I still have to file\sand the wood side plate to a point where the wood is actually below the "plane" of the side plate. The side plate is beveled (thanks to my work on filing it) so when done, the bevel part of the plate will be above the wood. The inlet black will be sanded away and all "should be" good. (I'll see how that works out)
The above side plate that I wanted to line up and drill won't work. I've moved and jockeyed with it for 30+ minutes only to determine it won't look right with the holes that need drilled. So, I'm sending this pre-drilled plate back and replacing it with an undrilled Lancaster style plate.
The time lag won't keep me from working on anything. Just my energy and ambition!!!!

Well, I'm not planning on having it done for the upcoming M\L season. But if I do I'll take it out. The build timeline will depend more on how hot the weather is this summer. The hotter it gets the more time I spend in my A\C garage.

"Blazing forward" is not a good approach, and even taking it slow with my experience....mistakes come easy. This is my 3rd build. The first (not really a build) was a T\C kit gun. The second was my 50 cal flintlock pistol. So....I'm very far from an experienced builder.
