HCO3125 By Lucas. Allows the use of semiautomatic rifles with a caliber of .223 or less and a cartridge capacity of not more than six, for the hunting of coyotes, foxes and woodchucks (groundhogs).
* April 21, 2014 09:29 AM * Rep. Gregory Lucas * Semiautomatic Rifles for Small Game * I will be introducing legislation amending the Pennsylvania Game Code * to allow the use of semiautomatic rifles with a caliber of .223 or less * and a cartridge capacity of not more than six, for the hunting of * coyotes, foxes and woodchucks (groundhogs). * * Currently under the Pennsylvania Game Code, it is unlawful to hunt any * game or wildlife with a semiautomatic rifle, regardless of caliber. I * believe this reasonable change in the law to allow such rifles with * limited calibers and cartridge capacity would benefit landowners, * livestock owners and hunters in the Commonwealth and I would appreciate * your consideration and support by adding your name as a cosponsor.
HB 2230 By Lucas. Amends Title 34 (Game), in hunting and furtaking, further providing for unlawful devices and methods. To allow the use of semiautomatic rifles with a caliber of .223 or less and a cartridge capacity of not more than six, for the hunting of coyotes, foxes and woodchucks (groundhogs). - May 1, 2014 - Referred to House Game and Fisheries
And the Senate version:
SCO1647 By Hutchinson. Allows for the limited use of semi-automatic sporting rifles for hunting coyotes and woodchucks.
* May 2, 2014 11:56 AM * Sen. Scott Hutchinson * Modern Sporting Rifles for Coyote and Woodchuck Hunting * In the near future I intend to introduce legislation amending Title 34 * (Game) to allow for the limited use of semi-automatic sporting rifles * for hunting coyotes and woodchucks. My legislation would suspend the * use of these firearms for varmint and predator hunting when those * seasons overlap the regular seasons for deer, bear and turkey. * * * The fact is, most modern sporting rifles are chambered for common * hunting cartridges and Pennsylvania is one of the few states that * disallow these firearms for hunting of any kind.

I prefer they just leave it up to the PGC to determine what we can use.
I have no problem with using semi's

Nice. A step in the right direction for a change. Be a tough road though.

If it makes it to game and fish, lots, and I mean lots of support is going to have to be sent their way.

I don't see that happening, just another wedge to divide us a bit more, it will continue until we crumble, like spoiled children we will never appreciate what we have until its gone.

The wedge is not as big as it used to be, Jim. Hunters are finally seeing the light a bit easier now when it comes to this issue. It is a non issue everywhere where they are legal, which happens to be most states.

And, on what grounds could hunters oppose their use for coyotes, foxes amd whistle pigs?

Go any where you like, a country store or a college campus, and ask ten people to name just one supreme court justice, with luck a few will be able to name one, now ask those same ten people what an AK-47 is, and every single one will tell you, not only what it is, but that they are for killing people.

AK, lol. How many folks that use a AK to groundhog hunt where they are legal? Ask 1000 people what a BAR is or a Rock River Fred Eichler coyote special is and maybe 10 would know.
Many use 38 special revolvers to kill people with as well? Your point?

What's your litmus test for what a legal firearm should be for hunting? If it can kill people?

I was taught as a young man to use a tool properly and as it was intended, hence using a screw driver as a pry bar or the back of a creasant wrench as a hammer brought a swift kick to the back side, levers and fulcrums made possible for a single handed man to have the strength, and do the work of many, and as long as you kept your mind you do it no matter the adversity.
These ideas have treated me well in life, one more has been, the making of enemies out of neighbors does nothing to bond a community, kind of like poking a caged dog with a stick, and not expecting to be biten when some one sets him free, dream on.

Maybe you missed it since it seems you don't follow the world of semiautomatics much, but the argument can be made that the best tool for the job is a semiauto in some cases. Many are designed and built specifically for hunting with their accuracy and ergonomics rivaling the finest bolt guns made today. Making enemies? Who, the folks that want most of our guns taken from us.........

Maybe because part of my job is bettering the ways we kill people, I see these weapons as what they are designed, built and constantly improved for, and that is the whole sale killing of humans. And they do it very well, can you Kill rodents with them? Of course, but like every thing else politicians do the real reasons are back room dollars in pockets, it has nothing to do with what's right or good for America, its about dollars, period

See, I can answer your questions. Huh! Promoting the shooting sports and hunting using all of the tools made for it is a bad thing. One more try. What is your litmus test for a what a legal firearm should be for hunting?

First of all, let's get this straight, I Don' t have to answer any of your quests for knowledge. You make poinante unbiased statements and then demand that I respond, not gonna happen . Assault weapons are just that, model 70s were used in war too but that was not their designed purpose, if you want want to play GI joe with your buddies go do it at the range.
Promoting hunting?
Yea right, that's another good one.

Yea right, that's another good one. The military uses model 70s for sniping terrorists. Those guns specifically designed for that purposes which is to kill people. There are semiautomatics specifically designed for hunting but somehow that is different. Playing Gi Joe? Ever see the PA hunters that do the long range sniping of deer with their bolt guns? Precisely how the military trains their snipers. Measuring barometric pressure, wind velocity, altitude etc..... I guess since they are using bolt guns, it is not GI Joe yet a coyote hunter that want to take his Remmy 7600 hunting is playing GI Joe and should not be allowed to in the world of bawana.

I agree Jim, not needed. Let all the Rambo types go shoot up the local gun ranges but stay out of the hunting woods.
Better yet buy an X-box or maybe enlist in our armed forces.

The true colors finally come out! I actually support a hunter being able to choose any legal firearm they wish to to hunt their quarry of choice. I also will promote all firearms to be used for all of their designed purposes. Whether it is sporting, defense or recreational. It is a fact that the use of semi auto for hunting, which happens to be legal in most of the country, has been a non issue among hunters and the non hunting public. Those that have made a issue of it are those that want to take them away from us for any purpose.

You all for getting rid of all of the ones that are not needed. Even though they have not caused a one negative thing. Rambo types........ I guess it is ok for all those law abiding Rambo types to own them as long as they only plan to shoot people and not coyotes.

The truly despicable part is lying about your full intentions to even get them included as hunting arms.
They are not good for hunters or hunting in general, and that's what should be important.
