Looks like a good one, Dave. Congratulations!
I saw lots of bucks, but for the first time in many years I will have to tote a rifle in firearms deer season. And none of My boys will be hunting the first day. The youngest is away at college and can't miss that Monday, the middle son could likey have made it, but he kill an eight poing the first evening of archery season. And the oldest boy is doing clinical rotations to finish his Physician's assistant masters degree. My wife would like to go along but has no interest in killing a deer herself.
I passed up my small bucks-even one six point at 4:30 an the last day. I told my wife I would shoot any buck with three points, even a half rack, if it showed up on the last day. But something would not let me loose the arrow. When he was at about twelve yards and his head was behind a tree, I did draw my bow. But when he stepped into a perfect shooting lane, I let the bow up. He saw the motion and trotted a few yards then slowly strolled away up the hill he had come down.
I was one of the best seasons I've ever had. I like morning hunts the best and made it out most mornings, even if for only an hour or so.

I was one of the best seasons I've ever had. I like morning hunts the best and made it out most mornings, even if for only an hour or so. I think that statement tells it all. It's not always about the taking of big game. It's about so much more of the "gift" to be able to get out in nature and enjoy the gifts it provides.

It was a goofy season for us.Other than shooting our bows,we put very little into pre-season preparation.I only put two cameras out for a week and spent the couple weeks before the season started to find some fresh sign. The first two saturdays my kid killed doe within the first hour so those days were essentially shot.It was so hot that we had to deal with them and couldn't afford to sit the rest of those mornings.Youth pheasant started and we hunted those morning for birds and only got a few more afternoon sits in.The weather was terrible on the days we were able to hunt so we sat quite a few days out.All total I think I got out 8 times and only had one sit where I was out for more than two hours. We didn't even get a chance to hunt the youth doe season for the first time since Jordan was 7.As far as success and deer sighting are concerned,we did well.On every sit except one, either one of us or both of us could have killed deer if we wanted. We didn't see loads of deer but we had deer within range almost every time.Jordan saw more bucks than me.I saw a grand total of two small but legal bucks and one non-legal that were within range.I got to spend some quality time with my kid and got to see him really start to figure this game out.No buck for me this archery season but no complaints either, except for the crappy weather.

This is the week fellas. Was driving home from work last night and caught eyes on the side of the road. Slowed down and watched an honest 160 class buck walk across the road in front of me. He came out of a fenced and heavily posted old landfill. This is the week the really old boys are on their feet the most.

I think I am gonna be able to sneak out tonight for a few hours. High winds don't look too appealing but it is the right time of the year to get out when you can get out.

Well that pretty much sucked. Seen two lonely fawns. Was hoping their momma was being run around the woodlot by a buck but no such luck.

Almost got it done this morning on my last archery hunt of the general season, most likely. I climbed up in the dark and soon had a buck milling around my stand within 30 yards. Through the binoculars, I could make out a good set a antlers but his body was hard to see as we lost most of our snow already. I had no idea what I would be shooting through either so I elected to not take the shot hoping he would be back. Needless to say he did not return. Not sure what he was but there were at least 3 good tines sticking up on the one antler.

I know it's straight wall case ammo only.....but I didn't know about the S-A question. Yes I believe so. Here is their legal equipment. Note that rifles and shotguns can be loaded with 3 shells total. Archery SeasonLongbow: Minimum draw weight 40 pounds. This includes compound bows and recurve bows. The arrow tip needs a minimum of two cutting edges, which may be exposed or unexposed and a minimum 3/4-inch width. Expandable and mechanical broadheads are legal. Crossbow: Minimum draw weight 75 pounds. The arrow tip needs a minimum of two cutting edges, which may be exposed or unexposed and a minimum 3/4-inch width. Expandable and mechanical broadheads are legal. Gun Season and Youth Gun SeasonShotgun: 10 gauge or smaller shotgun using one ball or one rifled slug per barrel (rifled shotgun barrels are permitted when using shotgun slug ammunition). Muzzleloading rifle: .38 caliber or larger. Muzzleloading shotgun: 10 gauge or smaller using one ball per barrel. Handgun: With 5-inch minimum length barrel, using straight-walled cartridges .357 caliber or larger. The barrel is measured from the front of the cylinder or chamber to the end of the barrel. Straight-walled cartridge rifles in the following calibers: All straight-walled cartridge calibers from a minimum of .357 to a maximum of .50. Shotguns and straight-walled cartridge rifles can be loaded with no more than three shells in the chamber and magazine combined. Archery equipment: See Archery Season, above.Muzzleloader SeasonMuzzleloading Rifle: .38 caliber or larger. Muzzleloading shotgun: 10 gauge or smaller using one ball per barrel.

Thanks!! Apparently so as long as the rifle is straight wall and you don't have any more that 3 rounds total in chamber + magazine. Handgun says "pistol". Not restricted to just a revolver or single shot...and apparently no magazine restriction.

Got a doe on 11/17 as I needed some meat for the freezer.Seen some really nice deer this November with some awesome bucks cruising on 11/8,passed on a small 6 point and had a beautiful 8 point sneak in on me as I was watching 2 Does behind me.He caught my movement and was about 30 yards away and since I shoot a longbow was not comfortable taking a shot at that distance, tried grunting him but showed no interest and watched him walk off.Oh well thats bowhunting.Good luck to all the rest of this hunting season.Lou

It was a tough early archery season on the properties I hunt, at least. I shot a small button buck then I shot a small Doe near the end of October. I didn't see one good Buck at all during the early archery season. I was presented with two shots on those two deer and took them. I know of quite a few Hunters around here that had no shot opportunities at all. There's so much baiting going on but I think a lot of people are doing it wrong because the deer are nocturnal. Every picture on my trail cams show the deer moving at night and nothing during the day. It's just been a strange season so far.
