I was contemplating hanging the bow up for the year and just spending all of my free time working with my son and his dog.Sunday morning I decided to hang a stand in a spot more for rifle season.I found this little funnel last flintlock season that runs into a big ravine.I saw one of the biggest bucks of my life that day and two other nice 8 points that should be even nicer this year. It's a pretty remote spot with no easy access but I hadn't been back since New years day.Jordan helped me hang it and then wanted to go for a walk to collect 20 different leaves for a science project.I found this old overgrown skidder trail than ran through a reverting clearcut that's probably 12 years old. It's getting past the useful stage for deer but there was a rubline on that skidder trail with some of the biggest rubs I've ever seen.I'm gonna have to hit that rubline but it's gonna take a south wind and that's rare.

Well.....I guess it's "feast or famine" at my favorite hunting spot. Today, it was windy. I didn't set up where I wanted to as my scent would have been carried directly into the section of woods where deer bed down. So, I went across the field to where the wind was in my favor. Well....until that last hour when the wind began to shift. I had one mama doe and her 1st year step out, only to have the wind change and snort....snort...snort!!!
No big deal as I'm just hunting bucks right now.
Still.......I was looking for that big boy....no luck. Thats why it's called hunting....not killing.

Saw 5 doe last night. Almost got a whack at one but the darn wind killed my chances. She came in on my downwind side. Just needed two more steps but she caught me.

Especially when you set up for the wind.......and (it seems) two minutes before the deer show up.....the wind changes directions!!! HA!!

She is missing her lower back leg right at the hock. She has been around for a few years and is doing just fine. He ham on the other side is super developed. I suspect a gun wound from a few years ago that healed over.

I spent three days hunting the ANF, looking for a big woods buck. Going in cold to a place I've never hunted with many square mile of timber was a little intimidating but it sure was fun. There were no defined paths that I could find, but there were a fair amount of chestnut oak acorns around. So I found a few rub lines and hunted two that had some of the bigger trees stripped of their bark. I did see deer every one of the five hunts. Three bucks and three does the first afternoon, and one buck the following morning. Only one was under twenty-five yards, and he had one of the smallest legal racks I've ever seen. Mostly does and fawns from what I could tell the other times. I don't have a tag for the WMU I hunted so they were of limits. I wouldn't have wanted to drag one that far anyway.
If I don't shoot a buck on my place next week, I may spend a couple days snooping around a few other places in the ANF where I have seen some big bucks while hunting squirrel and turkey after my archery tag was filled.

Couldn't go this morning kids home sick with a stomach bug that has gotten everyone but me. I am going to try and go to an area above the fields with thick cover along the ridge tonight. I figure since tomorrow is a wash out. Something is telling me to go to this spot. I hardly ever hunt this part of the mountain. Hoping this rain coming in gets them out and moving.

I found a torn up circle of mud on the otherwise leaf covered ground today that was full of deer tracks and places where hooves had slipped. There were aslo three clumps of white deer hair in the mud-looked like somebody got gored during that battle. Looked like they mixed it up pretty good, certanly more than a little sparring match. Getting anxious and can't wait to get a little I suspect

I kicked out quite a few grouse early this summer when looking for mushrooms. I haven't done that once this fall. I'm thinking all this wet weather we've had here was hard on the hatches.

I haven't flushed or seen a grouse in Washington County for a long long time. I do occasionally see them down at camp.

Well just had 3vdoe run under me. Either someone pushed them or a buck chased them because they were in a hurry. The buck never showed if it was one.

I had this fellow 15 yards from me!!! The only problem was.....he was probably 90 to 110 degrees to my right...and I'm right handed, and I could NOT get the crossbow around to line up the shot!! He suspected something "was up" as I only had about a 5 second window to make the shot. He took a few steps back and then stopped in a place where the thick stuff was between he and I. Then he sauntered down into the woods.....leaving me weeping!!!! Maybe next time!!!

Saw 2 doe, a 4 point, and several undetermined last night. Still haven't seen any rutting activity yet.
My rutcation starts Friday so hopefully the weather cooperates and the activity get turns up.
