I may take a little walk on Friday. Depends on how much, if any, snow we get, and how my legs feel. Looking for a good buck, have enough meat in the frezzer. I hate not being able to walk and still hunt like I use to. Sitting and watching the mountain laurel grow hoping something walks by is not my cup of tea. Hope the PT I finally got to start this past Monday for my back surgery I had this past August helps the tired legs problem. Back pain is just about gone, knock on wood.

Dave, a "slow walk" isn't quite a "dead run". These were two a leaping, and one on a uphill run. Hit the leaders in the heart…lungs, and the runner right under the eye. Dropped like a bag of rocks. Luck you say?? Maybe 1….or 2…but 3??

The old timer always told me, when I was boy just starting out, on a running deer when you see their nose in the sights pull the trigger. Don't know if that holds true or not, but they killed a lot of deer. Then again most were shooting iron sights, in 30-30, 32, or such with heavy triggers. Killed a 9 point once on the run at about 100 yards . I was looking at his horn through the scope, set on 1 power, to decide how good he was when the gun went off. Must of had a little more pull on the trigger than I thought, took him in the neck, and he nosed dived into the snow. I remember saying to myself, guest he's good enough.

My oldest grandson missed, what everyone said was a huge 10 point running across a field the last Saturday of buck season. He shot in front of it every time, when asked why he was leading it at only 75 yards his reply was. " If something is moving, that I'm shooting at in any of my video games, I have to lead it to hit it. He now knows that's not always true in the real world. LOL Hard lesson to learn, don't expect him to make that mistake again.

I've always led broadside running deer at 75 yards and I've killed them

My late Uncle shot a broadside Doe in a dead run at 100 yards. He said the cross hairs were on the nose and he hit it in the hindquarters. 30-06 and 220 grain bullet

Prior to that I'd pushed over 30 deer past him in two drives. He had a few chances to shoot but did the right thing and waited for a better shot that never came.A few more drives and he would have easily killed a deer.On the next drive two came running past him and he was impatient and took a shot that in my opinion was way too risky. It looked good but it was way more luck than skill. He knew better and didn't get an atta boy from me.He didn't even know that he hit the deer until he went over and saw it laying on a stump.

I've missed deer standing at 100 yards. I've seen bad shots on deer standing. I've always taken a shot on a running deer if the circumstances were right. It's all about confidence, and the fact that I shoot thousands of rounds a year may also have something to do with it.

I was gonna go out this morning. Got all my "stuff" prepped last evening, electric socks, electric vest, even my white over jacket and pants.
This morning at 17 degrees going to a high of 21 had me pausing. Then watching the news of one of those "Mobile TV Weather" units driving up RT 30 towards Ligonier (where I would be heading) shows rough ice and only one lane.
I've decided to wait until tomorrow when it's not quite as bad out. Ligonier got 4"....which I like!! The snow will be there tomorrow....as will the 10PT that's running up there, and the roads will be far better to drive on.

I’ll decide later this morning. Need to blow some snow after breakfast, maybe I’ll take a walk after doing that seeing how I’ll already be dressed for the cold. Accuweather calling for the wind to pick up, real feel of 8 degrees. I think I can get out of the wind by hunting the back side of the mountain behind the house though. Will wait and see. Got about 3 inches.

Was gonna head to Sullivan County camp yesterday but stayed home as didn't want to leave the Mrs alone to deal with snow. Looking out at 4-6 on the ground....was a wise choice! Looks like last weekend of season will be the ticket for the closing curtain outside of a stroll though Mom's woodland.

Finally a 1.5" of snow here but high of 38 tomorrow so much of it will melt off by noon Saturday I figure. Planning on an evening sit tonight close to home with the crossbow then flintlock tomorrow. Going to be a cold sit tonight 18 feet up. High of 23 here.

I'm with ya. My 15 yo isn't good enough to take a confident shot at a running deer. WAYYY more times than not, that deer will be wounded IF it is hit. That's "bad hunting" and certainly bad choice, in my opinion.
Reckon I hang with the wrong folks. There's not a soul I personally know, that should be shooting at running deer.

YOU'RE NUTS ! Or is it, YOUR NUTS ! ? I'm a fair-weather type of cat. Especially as I grow older. Probably the BP meds ? This weather, is why I want to join the arrow/bolt slingers in the earlier season with my Flinter. And have a valid chance at a hammer, slammer, frog, or toad, without freezing my NUTS off.

Spent the afternoon still hunting the back side of the mountain behind the house. It wasn't bad, I was out of the wind, and pretty with the new snow, only cut one deer track though, and it was from sometime last night. As Norwegians say," there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing" 😁

YOU'RE NUTS ! Or is it, YOUR NUTS ! ? Well. Sat from 230 till dark and had 4 doe at 30 yards and had some technical difficulties with one of those new fangled rangefinding scopes. I am thinking it doesn't like 15 degrees. It kept shutting down and I could not get a shot off. So much for the DCE's theory that these new scopes are making it too easy. With a conventional scope, it would have been game over. It was a pretty brutal sit though. Steady wind. I was frozen to the core by the time it got dark.
