Deer log #58, #13 with flinter. Deer seemed to be moving pretty good after 3pm. This one came in with 2 other nice doe directly behind my back. I turned to look around and the lead doe must have picked up on me a little and stopped, staring right at the tree I was on the opposite side of. The other 2 stopped. After a little the lead doe spooked and ran back, with the other 2 following her lead. The lead doe stopped though, broadside to look back again. That was a mistake. Dropped the deer in it's tracks as I caught the bottom of the spine. Deer never moved again.

It was a decent day for late December, although there's rain coming Thursday evening into Friday here. Then more rain to start off next week. Spent most of the day working on an archery course, blew off more leaves to take advantage of the relative dryness. Also figured the tractor might push some deer into another area? Quit and headed out with the 50 Cal. around 4 PM. Had a fawn of the year scoot ahead of me in the area I expected some deer to be. Too small for day one, might look more tempting in two weeks?

I have a few doe tags. With the family coming and going I likely won't get out until next week. Maybe Monday unless I need a "recovery" day from the grandkids.

Way to go fellas.Jordan and I went out for a few hours.I had a small buck stop well within range as I was pushing some deer.I even had enough time to sit down and get a rest on my knee as he decided whether to run or stare at me.I cocked the hammer and said bang as I watched the young fella run away and then stop for a second look not 60 yards away.I put a doe and a fawn within 30 yards of Jordan, which usually results in a boom and meat laying there but he didn't shoot at the slowly moving deer.I think he's learned that there's no reason to take a risky shot when you know you'll eventually get more chances if you put the time in.It was a fun day but I think I've had enough of dealing with dead deer for the year.

Saw deer today but no shots fired. Put 6 buck out on first drive. It’s warm out there for walking

Had my best morning in the woods so far this year today. Saw 10 doe and 1 shed buck. Had 3 doe and buck in my irons at 20 yards and let them walk. Looking for a racked buck. Took a 100 yd shot at a coyote and missed, but not by much. He did a backflip, almost scared him to death. Can't wait till morning to get back at it.

No hunting today. Decided to open up an overgrown trail some knothead decided to block with a huge pile of dirt about 20 years ago. It used to be the access road from the original club parking lot, up into an oak flat the black powder boys once used for their annual rendezvous gatherings. It's where attendees pitched their tents and tepees.
They'd built a bridge across the run from phone poles, that now needs rebuilt. Gonna see to that this spring.
Years ago the archery folks commandeered that oak flat for yet another field archery course and blocked off the old trail. Ticked me off at the time, because it was the quickest way to get out into that side of the property. Eventually the archers took over another wooded area, bounced the black powder walking range w/steel hanging targets and log bunkers, that had already been relocated previously for another field course.
That was pretty much it for the black powder club.
Got bonked on the noggin while thrashin' around on that trail, dozing brush and saplings out. Tangled up in some stout monkey vines, snapped a dead branch that landed on my head. Next time wearing a hardhat, if I can still find one of my old ones.
If it ever quits raining, head out again with the flinter on Saturday.
