ive got some foot hold traps that i picked up at a garage sale. first off i am 16 and i want to know if i have to be accompanied by a adault with trapping permit or since i have mine thats all that is needed as long as im the one setting baiting tending the traps. i only want to get a couple coons to start with and then once december rolls around i want to try my best to get the fisher. i dont know much about trapping so what would be the best start.

My son is doing some trapping as well, and is utilizing his "combo license". My license does not have a trapping endorsement. It is my understanding that he is well within his licensed rights to trap, so long as he is the one doing the work. I do assist as needed, but my involvement is minimal (pounding stakes into hard ground, helping find potential locations, escorting him on checking the traps, etc), but he does all of the "trapping" work- setting, baiting, harvesting..... and hopefully skinning.
Pretty sure you need a special permit for fishers though, just like bobcat. Not sure of how to obtain- license or lottery?
If anyone knows of any differences to the law, I would appreciate that insight as well.
Good luck in your trapping!

Well, today is a day that will live in infamy......well, maybe not so much. But....I did set my first trap today!! *hissyfit* Yep!! (or is that Yup?) Anyway, I got my Trapper ID a few days ago from the PGC...and after taking "Mom" to have her MRI done, I rustled up enough energy to get behind the house and set my first one. I know I have some raccoon back there and I know some fox....so we shall see what the week provides me with. Now, I did a dirt set and for me....and believe me I had given this some thought, but I "drilled" my dirt hole with one of these: Now, the one that I have has a 1-3/4" drill bit in it. It was easy to drill into the dirt with just leaning my weight into the bit some. Easier (I think) than using a shovel to dig out a hole. I stuck some bought bait down the hole, left a little lure at the top, sprayed some red fox urin after I sifted some peat over the firmly bedded trap, and then layer down a nice sifted coating of the dirt. I must day I was impressed. Now....we will see if the wild critters think so. This is somewhat easier than spending a morning hunting. I dunno, I am trying this as it may end up being the next "phase" of what I will do instead of archery hunting. It sure is different that hunting....but it's still going to be a challenge to see if I can out smart the predators. Dave

Since I may run over 200 land sets at a time I got away from using it because I have streamlined everything I do including tools. I almost never "dig" a dirt hole any more. I use holes that may already be there, flat sets, or I take my chain stake driver and pound it in to oval out a hole. I have several types of baits and I have found some that I like IN THE CONSISTENCY I like. I have basically two or three different types of bait and each type has a liquid version (to pore down the "dirt hole") and a past version for flat sets. The efficiency is a huge priority on my line and every tool has to earn its weight so to speak.

Well guys.....this may not be the place to post all of this....but it's funny how things go. Just the other night I was telling my wife that deer (Archery) hunting was really beginning to wear on me. I was going out, but not seeing any sign...and of course, no deer either. And as we know, it gets tough when that happens. For me, I spend half a day out and I have to take the next day to recover or rest from that. (No whining...just explaining.) Well, today I decide to try a spot that I scouted a few days ago. I saw some fresh rubs and droppings, so I figured I would at least see a doe. So, I went there this am and on my way in (It's a small patch located near a residential area. The guy who ownes this 10 acre parcel lets me and one other fellow hunt it. It's archery only as all around it is houses and some places where wood strips "lead into" it.) I jump up two doe. Good sign I thought. So, I only have to go in 50 yards from where I park, I cut out a small area to sit my chair in and across this path\road is where the rub is. About a 20 yard shot. So, I'm pretty well cammo-ed in there in my chair. In fact, there is no place anyone could put a tree stand. Just no trees that any type of stand could be used. Now, it's raining lightly and I figure I'm not going to last all that long.....but I'm here. So, I get settled and it's quiet. So I hit the grunt tube a few times. Nothing. I wait about 30 minutes or so, and I hit the grunt tube (pretty heavy) again. Nothing. Again, I let maybe 30 to 45 minutes go by. Now, it's been raining pretty steady. (Yeah...like the weatherman said....OFF AND ON...Yeah....all on...Wheres the off part?) So, I figure I have about 30 minutes left before my thermals reach "soak outta here" so I hit the grunt tube heavy once again. In about 3 minutes I see something move on the top of the small hill about 40 yards from me. I see a horn....then a head attached to the horn...then the buck comes on top of the hill. He's looking for that buck that was grunting. I scan him over and he's just a small 4 point. Now, he has a nice high rack....but not a big base nor is he a big buck. But he goes to my right and looks, then to my left and looks bob's his head up and down....and then he goes back...to what I assume is his dry bed. Well......I figure I perhaps didn't lose my "touch" anyway!! So, I call it quits to come back home. I figure I'd jump on my cart, swing down in the woods to check my one trap that I set the night before. Now, this time of year I always bring the crossbow along because....well, you just never know what is over the hill. I've jumped doe and buck. I've simply caught 'em laying there and they never heard me coming. So, over the hill I go and what do I run into? A flock of 8 turkey!! I stop. The birds and doing the "what do we do and which way should we go to get out of here?" I get out of my cart (And yes, they are still there!!) get my crossbow off of the holder, pull a bolt off the quiver, mount it in the crossbow (now to me, this seems to take an hour...and I figure by the time I look up...the birds will be in the next county) and too my surprise ....the birds and still doing the back and fourth shuffle!! I pick one out....doubtful the largest...I don't even know if a gobbler was in the group, estimated the yardage was 30 (and I was spot on) and TWACK!! Bird in the pot!! So, I get the bird, my bolt did a complete pass-thru, went under the leaves to the place called "never find it again". But I fill out my tag, go back up to my back yard....very happy, set the crossbow along side the bird, do the photo shoot, and then decide to go check the trap. I go check the trap......and WOW....lookie what I got!!! So, now I feel like "Outdoor Dave" What a great morning....and heck....it's only noon!!! But that's enough of a day for me. And a good one it is!!

Dave- Great tale of the hunt-loved it, thanks for posting it. Almost sounds like you were living out one of Pat McManus' stories- but you screwed up the ending by being successful!

I don't know a thing about trapping 'rat's. But I do know that 1" of ice will not hold up much of anything. So....I would not advise going on ice that thin.
