Ahhhh.....Youth!!...It's wasted on the young!! Good job!! I wish I had half of your energy!!!! went out in our wonderful freezing rain storm and checked today as usual nothing haha Show me a pic of your set up and tell me whatcha using for bait? I like using chocolate ice cream myself. (Now....do go believing everything I post!!!) But a pic and knowing what you use for bait would be a good start. Plus....do you see any sign of fox or coyote where your traps are set???

Cspot is right about the weather. I'm assuming your pulling your water traps. That pond your rat traps are set in is going to freeze deeper. I don't know how deep your rat traps are set, but leaving them there may cause them to be frozen in for a week or more. But again, I have no experience with water traps at all.
For your Coyote and fox traps you may want to leave that burger meat sit out and get "funky", "stinky", "unfit for human consumption" and just downright smelly. Then use that as bait for your traps. The bait I'm using is some of the smelliest stuff I've ever been near. The "dogs" gotta smell it in order to come to it. If you have a local trapper supply buy a small bottle of fox urine and a good spray bottle. I purchased a chemical spray bottle. It was was expensive for a plastic spray bottle ($8) but it has not leaked, the adjustable nose actually closes and will not leak. I highly recommend it. Put down about 3 or 4 squirts of fox urin on your set. That will attract fox, raccoon, possum....or as it seems, anything with fur and 4 legs.

I hear ya on the "wait"!! I'm waiting until this warm downpour rain pass's until I get back out and set again. I did get a flinter doe on Friday that took a lot of energy for me to get field dressed and into the truck. I think this may be the last time for deer hunting on my own. But, trapping will keep me getting out. Fox are much lighter to drag than a deer!! Plus....no field dressing!!

ive also got a better spot for muskrat next year. i sat for five minutes and saw six of them.. so i think there is a plentiful population of them. only problem is i have to go swimming in order to set/check them. six foot bank on either side and five feet of water that then goes into a swamp.

Or did his track indicate that he just "trucked on by?" I ask because if the track just shows that he walked right by it, perhaps the wind was such, ad strong enough that he never caught scent of your bait. I know that got really good sniffers....but it's possible. I don't know what the wind was like when he went by. But if he stopped, then something spooked him. Dave

he was on a dead down wind line from a piece of rotten hamburger thats been sitting out for 3 weeks. but he vanished on to a rabbit run. i think it was just that the one set happened to be on the line he was going. but i need a few bigger traps since i know for sure he is around. saw sign yesterday setting but these were fresh from last night they were in the wheeler tracks that i made yesterday so we will see how it goes a 1 1/2 isnt going to cut it for a yote

a 1 1/2 isnt going to cut it for a yote That may be tough to hold him. If you can pick up a bunny road kill cut a piece of that fur for bait. Just make sure it's hidden so that any Red Tails can't see it from the air. You don't want to #1, get in any hot water with the PGC and you don't want to mess with a red tail. OTOH, should that ever happen you really need to cover their head\eyes. Hawks entire world comes through their eyes. I was speaking to a fellow at the last Game Commission who owned and hunted with a falcon and he said as long as their eyes are covered, they are as peaceful as a kitten. But...take off that leather cap and it's a whole new ballgame. Dave

If you are using 1.5's in today world for even fox they need to be fully modified because coyotes live in every county of the state and sooner or later you will have one vist your set. When he does you want him there the next time you check. Yotes are powerful animals and will shread a stock 1.5 to scrap pieces. This time of year is a great time to use gland lure with mating season starting. LB

no warmup in sight and i need to get to the store for some more #2s. might pick up some lure to. but ive got fox urine on my sets for fox. ive got about 20 more im gunna do 10 more sets and just do double sets to increase my chances. i originally went for coon and that was bout it but no sign of coon here its a old pasture all redbrush. prime bunny hunting. so of course the fox and coyotes love it.

Well, you really can't argue with Loingbeard. He does know his stuff. I would not have trapped what I did without his guidance. Get some skunky gland lure and stink 'em up. I'm going to re-set some traps where I know the coyotes run. I have that skunk smelly stuff.....just ask my wife. smileys-whistling-823718

Another thing you may want to try is adding eye appeal to your sets or making sets at a spot in a field or area that sticks out and catches your eye.I drive down the road and pick out set locations every day. It's a habbit now. Like that lone tree in the middle of a field or that small patch of brush in a field where the farmer can't plow cause its to rocky and it's over grown with weeds and brush. The narrow points on these spots are the ticket for preds. If there is nothing eye catching you can transplant a big clump or grass to draw thier attention to. Another location that's good is tractor paths that are intercepted by a crop change. My favorite spot of them all! After this light snow get out and look and follow tracks. You will learn a lot doing this. When using the "stink" in cold weather like this I use about a marble size on the back lip of the dirt hole or right down in it when the weather is warmer (about the size of a pea). And keep in mind prevailing wind !
