Most places in this state are overrun with 'coons. 'possums, skunks, and coyotes. I think the PGC should pause the furtakers tag and allow taking the critters by gun or traps by any license holder. JMO

Fall and spring season needs cut back to two weeks, one bird each season. PersonallyI would even eliminate the youth hunt. Turkey population is so small, both here at home and camp, I quit hunting them. Fur prices are so low it's not worth the trouble to put up pelts, and I hate wasting the hides. Makes me mad every time I just throw deer hides away every winter with the bones, but you can't even get a raw fur dealer to take them for free.

Shooting male turkeys doesn't effect the population.

Shooting male turkeys doesn't effect the population. Maybe not, but I agree with Fleroo too. What doesn't do any good, is having hunters running through the woods from sunup till sundown at nesting time. Seasons length needs cut back. I'm not saying that it's the major cause of the decline, I don't know what is, and I don't think the biologists know either. The long season is not helping in the return of our turkey population, and It's one thing that we can easily control, and see what happens.

First half of Spring Season season hunters can only hunt until noon to help avoid disruption of nesting.

last summer I saw flocks with poults the size of quail and some the size of full-grown chickens on the same day. I'd have to guess the small birds were the result of at least the first attempted hatch being lost to predators or maybe weather. I also thought that the number of young seemed low for the number of hens in the flocks.

PersonallyI would even eliminate the youth hunt. Man, what do you have against kids hunting and fishing? That you didn't have the same opportunities when your started? First the youth trout season on the other board and now youth turkey season.

PersonallyI would even eliminate the youth hunt. Man, what do you have against kids hunting and fishing? That you didn't have the same opportunities when your started? First the youth trout season on the other board and now youth turkey season. First off, it sure wasn't because I didn't have the same opportunities that kids today have, I had more. I grew up on a 300 acre dairy farm back in the 1950's. I was hunting ground hogs,, by my self, with a 410 shotgun at 10 years of age, perfectly legal at that time on our property. I was also driving a tractor with a hay rake behind it at that age, along with doing , or helping to do a whole lot of other things that would blow your mind. My problem with youth hunts and fishing has nothing to do with the youth, it's the so called mentor that's with them. Don't get me wrong, I know it's not all mentors, most probably do a good job like Dutch did last year. At the same time I have seen way to many so called mentors along the creeks fishing by them selves while the youth they are mentoring plays along the bank 50 yards away. There should only be one rod in that on hands teaching, and it should be in the youths hands. That youth should know how to cast that line before arriving at the stream well enough to get it in the water, or at lease with very little help from the mentor. The hunting part I feel is being abused also, thought I've never seen it. At lease there's only one gun involved with the hunt, but I sometimes scratch my head, when I see a photo or read an article about a 10 year old killing a turkey using a 12 gage shot gun. There are very, very , very few 10 year old that can handle the recoil of a 12 gage shotgun especially with turkey loads. As a matter of fact, there are few that can handle a 20 gage with modern day turkey loads, especially with a light weight gun. If that youth shot either one of those guns before the hunt I'm also sure that when the time came to pull the trigger on a live bird, he flinched so bad it would of been lucky if they even came close. At the same time I do feel there are some that could pull it off, using a crossbow or light gage semi auto shotgun at close range, but not many at 10 years of age. I do think a 10 year old is old enough and should be allowed to tag along with a mentor on a hunt, as a matter of fact I enjoy seeing it. I also feel that any youth, or for that matter any adult, that's going hunting for the first time needs to have a basic, live fire, hands on firearms safety class before they are allowed to purchase a hunting license. I also have a problem with the mentor having to carry the firearm for a youth while hunting. I want that youth caring it so I can correct them right away on any unsafe carry or move. The first year could be done without live ammo in chamber, then allowing live ammo after that if the mentor feels the youth can do so safely.

Completely agree. Soooooo short-sighted to also let an adult fish in the "mentored" season. And you're right. Not all, but MANY rednecks can care less if their yute is fishing, as long as they have that rod in their hand and can fish. How exciting that must be.

So what I am gathering is we should restrict what the good guys can do with their kids and make laws and regs to cover what the bad guys may do. In the case of youth turkey, even though it was never witnessed.......
How does one teach a kid to fish and instill that passion for the sport if only the kid can hold the rod enduring endless bird nests, tangled line, snags, line in trees, missed fish, gut hooked fish, lost fish and a myriad of other issues. You guys crack me up. All over kids catching stocked trout before everybody else.

In the case of youth turkey, even though it was never witnessed....... Done all the time. You and I have had our gun rights restricted by the bad guy. There are sorts of things I can't purchase because of the bad guy. There are many things that I buy that takes me 5 minutes with a hammer and chisel to open due to bad guys. etc, etc etc.

You and I have had our gun rights restricted by the bad guy. Yep. Is that a good thing and do you feel the good guys should be further restricted? That is what you are advocating for. Youth turkey should be eliminated and more restrictions put on youth trout day to prevent abuse by the bad guys. There are lots of hunting and fishing laws and regs we could make more restrictive to try to keep bad folks from abusing the system.

Gene, my intent wasn't to "crack you up". You're losing sight of what the issue is in all too many cases, when it comes to Mentored Youth FISHING. Sure those youth will have "endless bird nests", "tangled lines" and "snags in trees" if their MENTOR has his Fenwick in hand, raking in every fish they can, all the while leaving the youth to their own devices. The youth will quickly lose interest, and start skipping rocks. THAT'S not what mentoring is. But I think you know that. There is NO REASON an adult should be fishing in the MY season. The adult should be instructing, and giving guidance to the YOUTH. Good God. You're turning it in to.... Yinz must hate kids. Come on man !
PFBC is missing the boat in thinking they need to let an adult fish in MY season... PERIOD !

There is NO REASON an adult should be fishing in the MY season. The adult should be instructing, and giving guidance to the YOUTH. The adult has to be allowed to fish to do all of that. You cannot enforce a regulation that says only the kid can "fish" if the goal is teaching kids to fish. For grown men to make such an issue about youth days, it makes one wonder what the fuss is about................... As I said before, they have to if one is going to properly instruct a kid to fish. PERIOD! Now there should be discretion allowed for citations for those looking to circumvent the intention of the youth days. If the kid is playing in the mud and the adult is two holes up fishing, then a well worded regulation could be made to enforce abuse.

The one that takes his kid fishing , tosses the line in for him and wanders off to fish himself ? Or is it the one that leaves his rod at home and spends all his time teaching the youth how, and encouraging him? Yes there is more laws and regs that could restrict the bad guy, and in this case it doesn't hurt the good guy any because he's busy teaching the youth how to fish, instead of fishing himself. The mentor's day is just a short week away when he can fish. He can also take that youth, and hopefully has taught him enough the week before that he too can fish without much help, and fish with him.

Here's my 2cts. I mentored my 2 Daughters plus one Grandson at a very young age(plus have 3 more Grandkids coming onboard shortly ). I have over 60 years fishing experience spanning from fishing for bluegills in a farm pond to AK Halibut fishing and most everything inbetween.. I'm not a casual/novice fisherman by any means.....and consider myself an experienced fisherman being very respectful of/plus positively furthering our sport. When mentoring my kids I NEVER EVER took a rod/reel for myself!! The same goes for crabbing......I'm NOT even in the line-up....I'm just their coach. In fact....I never even considered taking tackle for myself. My time mentoring has always been 100% consumed(AND THEN SOME!!) teaching the youngster(s) the basics ranging from water safety, tackle safety, fishing courtesy, casting/retreiving techniques, hook setting, playing fish, dehooking fish, ethical fish handling, knot tying, baiting, working thru tanglements etc etc etc etc. IMO.....if you are truly mentoring a youth you really do not have time to fish yourself if doing your job.
