Checked ballistics of the Norma 30-06 Bondstrike Extreme 180 grain vs a typical 300 Win Mag 180 factory Load Muzzle 100 Yds 200 Yds 300 Yds Drop @ 300 yds (100 yd zero) 30-06(Bondstrike Extreme) elocity (ft/sec) 2756 2609 2467 2329 12.3"(3.5" 200 yds) Energy (ft lbs) 3035 2720 2432 2166 300 Win Mag Velocity (ft/sec) 2960 2766 2580 2400 9.4" Energy (ft lbs) 3477 3052 2671 2328 I was impressed that the 30-06 still retains over 2,000 ft lbs energy at 300 yds only 7% less than the 300 Win Mag. Putting those 400 yarders out of my rifle expectations least for the current moment! Of course you could go to Normas Bondstrike Extreme ammo in the 300 Winnie!! Guess it never ends!! lol Got some 06 range work ahead but the ole 06 seems to be plenty(least on paper with right ammo) to punch a tag assuming I'm lucky enough ever draw one again!! Thanks for all the good input here!!

Well the velocity has to be there to expand whatever bullet you're using at whatever range you are using it. Otherwise you risk wounding. So the important thing is what the velocity window is for the bullet you have chosen. That lets you know the limits of your range

That's what impresses me about Norma's Bondstrike Extreme ammo. At extended ranges it still expands due to bullet construction plus read reports on 50 yd hits it still maintains bullet integrety due to rear sectional bonding. I also bought some Bondstrike Extreme Ammo ammo for my 6.5 CM when Norma had a great sale about a month ago. I have shot tons of Norma's Oryx ammo out of my 6.5X55 Swede all inside 150 yards with no issues.
Short Range Performance

That's the whole thing. Traditionally the 30-06 was viewed as a poor 400 yard Elk cartridge because it no longer had enough velocity to open up the 180-200 grain bullets of that day. Modern advances in bullets have changed the game though.

With that said the challenge is the same as it always has been. Getting a bullet that works at 50 to still work sufficiently at 400 yards. It's easy to find a bullet for 50 and to find another one for 400 but bullets that successfully cover that range on large game are few. That's where diameter helps. Bullets don't shrink. But that larger diameter bullet has a greater trajectory and makes that 400 yard hit harder. So guys use 338 and 375 magnums to flatten trajectory but then the recoil becomes a factor and once again that 400 yard shot is still a challenge to make. I mean you could run a 45-70 out to 400 yards and at 50 or 400 it doesn't even need to expand. The diameter is already there. But just try and hit an animal at 400 with that steep trajectory

Modern advances in bullets have changed the game though. That's for sure Mike!! Just wish the new improved ammo could be bought for $10/box like ammo years ago!! I know the PA elk I killed back in 2020 wasn't that big only about 275-300 lbs and I put 2 6.5 Swede 154 grain Norma Orynx bonded rounds squarely through both lungs and elk just stood there motionless until I laid one through base of neck then dropped in its tracks. I was solidly shooting off tripod sticks @75 yds & never forget Guide Lonnie whispering("What the F*#K!!" )after 1st & 2nd shots. Butcher said the 2 through lungs just punched through with minimal expansion. A learning experience for sure!!

100 grain Barnes TTSX out of a Creedmoor, at reduced velocity at 40 yds. Love how perfectly it mushroomed

As far as the perfect caliber, I'm leaning toward the .22 mag behind the ear. Say Bushy, would you mind guiding and holding the light for me?
I know what you're thinking Dutch...damn bunch of outlaws.

When we butchered hogs.....forget the 22 Mag!! A 22 short behind a 400 Lb hog's ear was all needed!! No sense in working them up with a mags loud crack!!

I have yet to see a Barnes bullet that didn't mushroom perfectly! As long as impact velocity stays north of 2,000 fps

When I dispatched a hog during butchering, Larry, I'd mentally draw a line from his right ear to left eye and left ear to right eye and pop him at the center of the X with a .25 Stevens favorite. I didn't care to bleeding the hog though.

That's all it took Dan one wellplaced shot!! Spent my younger years on a farm before Dad got a factory job and moved family. The butchering tradition moved with us as we always butchered a hog or 2 each year around New Years Day. I still have some of ole cast iron butchering kettles. That's when I was first introduced to fried brain, souse, pickled ear & feet, tripe(hog maw-stomach) etc....YUMMY!! Wasn't much left when done.

I have yet to see a Barnes bullet that didn't mushroom perfectly! As long as impact velocity stays north of 2,000 fps Barnes does make a 127 gr in 264 designed for long range. It needs 1600 fps or more to perform.

Well worth 21 minutes of your time for those who have interest in topic!! Ron always puts out informative videos/articles!! I like his approach by picking "best" within each bullet caliber size. No nod for the 6.5 CM though!!

I loaded some of them up this year.Jordan double lunged a doe this year at probably 120 yards or so.The deer mule kicked and made it at least 100 yards. We were both surprised how far it ran but that happens sometimes.Typical quarter sized exit wound and the lungs were mush. I've lost track of how many deer we've killed with accubonds but we've killed them from 20 yards to well over 200 yards and the terminal performance was also consistently perfect.Pretty much the same with any ttsx that we've used.
