This is an interesting discussion. Muttley has shot four and Loggy one. Everybody else is an expert on the "Best elk cartridge", lol.

Been reading a lil on the 300RUM and learned it was developed on the 416 Rigby case basically beingecked down etc to .308 diameter with significant increase of powder volume resulting vs the other 300's. Pretty much taking this choice off the table. The ole 30-06 sitting in the safe is looking friendlier all the time!

With regards to the magnums it just depends how serious you are about that 400 yard Elk. I have already settled in my mind I don't want one at that range so I'm able to forego the magnums. But for anybody who won't hesitate on a 400 yard Elk the magnum .30's are top choices

Is a person presenting himself as an expert for simply having an opinion on a subject that he has given some thought to and probably some research.
People offer opinions on subjects they have no personal experience with all the time. I know a guy who claims that deer "die too hard" when shot with an arrow. He's old, but he does preface many of his opinions with, "Well, I ain't sayin' am an expert, but........

My opinion is I don't know what the best elk cartridge is but if I ever draw a tag in the general season, I will be taking my 300 Winnie with 180 grain bonded bullets.

If I had a once in a lifetime tag, like in Pennsylvania, I'd buy a new gun, 300 Win Mag, then I'm good for any shot. If I happened to have a big one at 400 yds, it's going down.

If I'm a resident of Montana, like my nephew, and had a cow tag, I'd take whatever gun I got.

I just can't believe that I couldn't stalk closer than 400 yards. I've stalked them up there while deer hunting and got within good cell phone camera distance

You can take a 400 yard shot in some places up here but you can also get a lot closer. Most hunters have no business taking a 400 yard shot anyway.More than a few elk get winged every year,More than a few are also not recovered with bows and crossbows.

Pretty soon you have a creedmoor.🤣 I tried last fall. Went into Shydas and told them I want a left hand 6.5 Creedmoor in the Ruger American. They said two weeks to get it in or we have the Predator in left hand but 243 right now. I got the 243 because I would have to wait. Trouble is I knew I was buying a 22-250 before Spring this year in the Savage Axis. Now I'll have a lot of overlap between the 22-250 and 243

Worst trigger I ever used, until I put the spring kit on. Amazing
