How about a hunting thread? Post up your hunts and stories here.
Today was the opener in the SRA. I hunted both in the morning and evening. Just got back home from the evenings hunt. 10 does and 2 small bucks. Almost got a whack at a doe this morning a first light but she never came into one of my shooting lanes. had her at 18 yards.
All in all it was a great day!

For me.....it's to early in the season to hunt. Although the weather is very cooperative with the cool temp's.....I like it when the rut get's heated up and bucks are chasing doe with no thought of their safety !!!

I like watch the deer change patterns as early fall changes to winter. The buck hunting gets better the last couple weeks but there is no better time of the year to be out in the woods, having a bow in my hand is just additional icing on the cake.

I decided to take the week off that has that first Sunday we can hunt. I'll be in a ladder stand in Potter County that Sunday
And for the first time in my life, I'm taking the first week of deer season off!

We are short-handed as it is and can't seem to hire anyone, so, I do care about putting them into a bind.

Had a big shooter 8 point at 23 yards broadside tonight and managed to not get an arrow sent his way. Ugh! He was cruising at 5:30.

Got a doe yesterday and saw a really nice 10 point chase a doe around for quite a while for about an hour toward quitting time. Saw seven bucks before 9:00 this morning. 4 were sublegal, 1 six point, one small eight, and a pretty impressive 8 or ten point. The big one snuck in on me while it was watching the small eight point and caught me when I turned back around. I grunted and/or bleated to 5 of the bucks and they either totally ignored them or stopped only briefly before continuing to walk away.
My wife saw a couple small bucks and does and a pretty nice one with a damaged front leg that was too far for a shot. Things went dead from 9-11:00 for both of us so we walked back home.
The fog was really thick here 'till after 10:00.

Woods were wet and very quiet. He came in behind me on my downwind side and I didn't see him till he was 15 yards and closing. If he got past me, I would have no shot. I tried to swing on him and he caught me and took a few hops and stopped at 23 yards broadside staring at me. I lined up and squeezed the trigger. When nothing happened I then realized in the scramble I forgot to take the safety off. The buck had enough at that point and bolted.

I did an all day sit yesterday. Saw nothing till 10 then between 10 and 2 saw 7 does. The only ones close enough were fawns so they got a pass. At 4:00 I had a legal 5 point come past at 20 yards. He had 4 nice points on his left side and a big spike on the right. He got a pass. That was it after 11 hours in the stand.
Pretty slow day. I thought it would have been much better. Hoping it picks up next week. Monday is looking cold and windy.

We're supposed to have 1/2" of snow by Monday morning. I'm hoping they are right about that. I could do without the wind and it may cut the morning sit short. If the snow does coat the ground I'll spend most of the day scouting some ground I haven't checked out since a spring time mushroom hunt.
Yesterday afternoon was very slow compared to the excitement of the morning. We each only saw a doe.
BTW Ridge, there's a buck we've seen a couple times on the hill behind our house that sounds like the one you passed. My wife says she will shoot him if given the chance. If I haven't killed a buck by the last afternoon, he won't get another pass from me.

Saw "that" big 8-pt again last night. He's got a BIG body and a nice rack.....not a "trophy" rack and far from a basket rack.....but he's for sure a keeper!! I'll be back to try and get him close!!!

Saturday morning we took the dog and hunted pheasants. We got home around 11:00am,put the dog in the house and drove out to a place Jordan found last week.We hung a stand and I dropped him off around 3:30 and went to a different spot about two miles away.Right at 5:30 after a series of grunts and a tip of the can I caught movement to my right and behind me.I had a hard time seeing the rack because of all the branches but he appeared to be way past his ears.I was in a ladder stand that I put up for Jordan a few years ago but hadn't hunted it because of the lack of acorns those years.Unfortunately, the stand creaked like crazy If I tried to stand or position myself for a shot to the right. The buck kept coming and made a scrape less than 25 yards away broadside but I couldn't turn and shoot.Eventually he kept coming and I drew, anchored my 30 yard pin and hit him a touch back.As he ran away,I couldn't see a lot of points but he was a mature deer and the rack was way past his ears and he ran into a creek bottom. Not 5 minutes later,Jordan calls me and said he just killed one of several doe that a small 8 point was chasing around his new stand.Knowing my shot was back,I climbed down, made a big circle to get to my truck,as to not bump the buck and made it to Jordan's stand right at last light.he saw the doe drop so recovering it and getting her back to the truck was no problem.Yesterday morning we were out as soon as it was light enough to see.I found my arrow and to my surprise it was blood and not guts. Not 60 yards from where I saw the deer stop,we found him.I gotta be honest,I was less than thrilled about the shot and thought he was much bigger. He ended up being a 17" wide 6 point with brow tines about 2".Not really what I wanted to end my season with but he was still at least a 3.5 year old with a big body.

The bird hunts have all been awesome and I've yet to fire a single shot.Jordan has killed his limit every time out and has only missed one bird.In fact,I think he's only taken two shots at one.My motivation is just sitting back and watching him and his dog learn how to hunt together. It's about as satisfying as it can get.The dog just turned three so she's a little overly enthusiastic once we get out there.Usually she get's too far ahead and bumps one or two before I can keep her reigned in.She has no issue finding them and when they sit still, she'll give us a good solid point.Once she get's that first bird in her mouth, she settles right down. There few things better than watching a young dog make a good solid point and then followed up by a nice shot from your kid.Seeing the dog running back with the prize in her mouth never gets old. We've been hunting SGL 44 most of the time, which is an absolute gem.It get's pounded but there's a lot of birds and more than enough room to get back in and stay out of other hunter's way.It really doesn't get any better than watching two of your favorite people hunt together as a team and watch both of them smile the entire time.I feel bad for people who never get a chance to experience that.Every girl should grow up with a horse and every boy should grow up with a bird dog. That would make the world a better place. The kids just went to school full time today.I plan on doing a few solo hunts with the dog over the next couple of weeks.I may even kill one or two.

I killed a pretty decent ten point a little after 7:00 this morning. It and a small buck came chasing a doe around my climber. He made it about 80-100 yards but we found very little blood until just before a friend walked up on him lying next to a gas well road.
