Well it has happened after 50 years of archery I can no longer pull back my bow......I've had some health problems lately that has zapped my strength so I have purchased a cross bow.....I swore I would never own one but here I stand xbow in hand …...I did a ton of research and being cheap I opted for a PSE Fang Xt 165 pound draw weight 350 fps …..I assembled it mounted the optics and discovered I couldn't cock it using the draw rope so I waited for the neighbor to stop buy and had him pull it back...I set it up in the gun vise and told Jim looks like I'm gonna loose a bolt Well first shot at 20 yards dead center …..So now I'm waiting for my cocking device to arrive so I can shoot it by myself and set the other yardages ...I wasn't ready to end my archery hunting yet after all I'm only 70

Skwirl, I would also have had to give up archery hunting if crossbows hadn't arrived on the scene. It was not a hard choice for me to make. A day spend hunting is much better sitting at home, thinking about why you can't.

Disclaimer, I have no pup in any bow type fight, as I don't archery hunt. But, crossbows pretty much have always been on the scene. I think yinz guys are the types that the permits would have benefitted, when it took a permit to use a x-bow. If ya can't pull back a bow, due to injury, arthritic, or plain ol' old and feeble, well no problem getting a doc to issue a permit. Yinz still would have been in the game.

I resemble some of those remarks!

.... and don't they have "specialty" kinds of pullers for those things ? I mean, instead of a manual cocking pull string, I thought you can get something mechanical with a crank. Hook it on, turn a crank, and it cocks the bow ? or am I full of schnizzle ?

I hate seeing healthy adults using such a weapon in archery season. As a friend (also in his seventies)recently said of his first year with a crossbow, "It's like six weeks of buck hunting with my .32 special." Good luck with your new weapon, skwirl. I'm glad there a way for you to stay in the game.

I would use one if I wasn't capable of using a compound just to get out there.I just like shooting my bow and going to the occasional 3-D shoot.I don't find crossbows fun to play around with and practice with.

Great Skwirl!! I bought an Excal Exocet 200 back when Full Inclusion was passed but have never hunted with it but love shooting it!! In fact haven't bow hunted with anything for a number of years...been too busy keepin the Mrs happy with fish fillets/crab cakes as she ain't a big venison fan. I do hope to carve lil time to hunt with my Excal this coming season. This darn retirement life is busier than I ever thought!!

I bought one last year and harvested a deer with it from the ground. I bought the thing mainly for my daughter and for after Christmas. I also bought a new compound last year I'm no way ready to go to the crossbow full time but I'm glad now that it's an option if and when I need it.

Good luck I think you will adjust to your new crossbow just fine! His first shot was dead center-sounds like there is very little adjusting needed.

Isn't that the main goal of archery? Make a good shot to insure recovery.

Isn't that the main goal of archery? Make a good shot to insure recovery. Yeah...that's whut I always thought. I know when I was shooting compound bows I went to a trigger pull/wrist strap type Winn Free release and it helped make extremely consistent/accurate shots vs finger pulling with little adjusting.. Mebbie I shoulda felt guilty in that it made things too easy?

As much as it is with a rifle or any weapon, tk. That's really all there is to any kinda huntin, ain't it? Special seasons for different weapons is a ridiculous concept.

"Well first shot at 20 yards dead center." sounds to me like little adjustment IS needed. It is great that the PGC allows the use of such a weapon when there are hunters that would otherwise have to give up archery season. But.........You'se crossbow guys are such one sensitive group of hunters. And it sounds like ya'll believe anyone picking up a compound and a release wil shot dead center from the first shot too.

Red I'm not a archery hunter I think the one shot he took out of a vise dead center is good for first shot but I was meaning it might be an adjustment for him for using regular bow for long time and getting used to crossbow from the backyard to the woods actually hunting with it

I know some ole timer rifle hunters that stayed with open sights vs going to optics. They feel it takes the sport out of rifle hunting. I personally could care less on whut weapon anyone hunts with as long as it's legal and they employ sportsmanlike behavior while using such weapon. When you start thinking outside of those parameters...some self evaluation may be in order.

I know that Rem700. My post was a sorry attempt at humor. I should have known, from how quickly discussions having anything to do with using crossbows go downhill, that a joke was a bad idea.
Again, I hope Skirl continues to get as much from archery season as he ever has.

My pal, yinz , may know him as "Grouchy" (or was it "Grumpy") from prior tales, bought a x-bow last year. Cabela's had a sale on them, and I have no idear what brand. But, it was a package deal. Bolts, broadheads, cocker, scope, maybe case ?, xbow, etc.... He's 67 yrs old and a cheap ass, and he said the price was around the $250 range ? He took it home, slapped stuff together, went to his yard, and proceeded to center-punch those bolts into the target at 20 then 30 yards, after a few tweaks of the scope. He said he was amazed.
What's it prove ?
1. you don't need to spend $1000 on a setup to kill a deer with a x-bow 2. they're perty derned easy to square up, and make a killing shot. Even the lame, feeble, and grouchy's (or was it Grumpy ?) out there. LOL

They should start big game season the first of Oct. You should be able to take any big game you have a tag for anytime and with any legal weapon.
