About 10 years ago I just needed to satisfy my whim to buy a 300 so went out & bought a new Rem 700 SS DM in the 300 Win Mag. Hunted with it for about 3 years & then sold. Killed 2 buck & 3 doe all quick kills. Looking back wish I wouldn't of sold. Ever have that happen? lol
Thought I shook the craziness but now here I am again thinking my gun safe is missing a 300 with only 2 puny 6.5's & an 06 sitting there. So......any thoughts on a 300 WSM, 300 WM or a 300 RUM. Love to hear your opinions, experiences etc!

I traded a Remington 40-XB in 7 mag years ago for a shotgun. I still kick myself. A shotgun? Really? A highly accurate rifle, for the time, for a shotgun. SMH.

You may need to put on about 50 more lbs. to shoot the 300 RUM, and still keep your shoulder where it should anatomically reside.

You may also need the stock market to break all-time high records, in order to afford the rounds that feed into it.

I cured my magnumitis with the purchase of a Tikka M658 chambered in 7mm mag about 20-some years ago. This is the model with the role-over cheekpiece. Talk about a tack-driver. It's pleasant to shoot and nice to look at while sipping a bourbon.

If I remember correctly Doug here either has or had a 300 WSM? Curious on his thoughts when he's back online.
When I was at Elk camp on my 2020 PA Late Season Elk hunt all hunters(think there were 8 of us) all were either carrying a 300 WSM, 300 WM or 300 RUM other than myself using my 6.5X55 Swede Mauser and one guy with a 30-06.

I have had a lot of magnum rifles including three 300 magnums but I have never carried a magnum afield. Closest I got was I took a 7mm Magnum on my one Moose hunt but never got to use it because I killed a Bull the first morning with a 450 Marlin

Before pulling the trigger on a 300 ....gonna run some of the Norma Bondstrike 180's through my Rem Mod 700 30-06. Based on ballistic info they are capable of decent energy(>2,100 ft-lb) out to 300 yds. Even at 400 yds energy exceeds 1,900 ft-lbs. Some of the newer premium 30-06 ammo is pretty impressive!

The 30-06 has always given me everything I need. My wife's cousin is a fisherman in Alaska. He's inviting me out for bear hunting. Brown or Black. I'd go black but I'd take my 30-06 for either

I hear you Mike. My Dad killed 4 Quebec bears and 1 383lb PA bear all with his 760 30-06. All were dead within 25 yards shooting 180 grain REM Core Lokts. I need Dad here to screw ole Loggy’s head on straight!😆

Nothing wrong with the old 06 for just about everything. I have two 300 win mags. I would go with the 300 win mag if you still have a hankering for a magnum. Many more options in guns and readily available ammo.

I jumped on the 300WSM when it was first introduced.I think I bought the first stainless stalker Grice got in.At the time, brass and dies were available but very little if any factory ammo.I ended up selling that rifle to my buddy and picked up a kimber Montana in the same caliber.Even in such a lite rifle,I don't find the recoil to be obnoxious and it accurate and hit's like a freight train. It's been a while since I've killed a deer with it,although my son has killed some.I did shoot a bear with it lasy year.I don't see any elk hunts in my future so it will likely spend more time in the safe than in the woods as I have a couple other rifles that I like carrying around better.

You're also in your early 50's, and built more like Schwarzenegger, rather than Don "Fife" Knotts. It's all relative. LOL

Mid 50's with a tweaked right shoulder. It's not bad to shoot but not needed in Pa.

The 300 Win Mag I had really didn't bother me recoilwise. I once had a Mosssy 835 & with the 3.5" 12 mag shells I did start to blink a lil after several patterning shots from the bench but when squeezing one off on a longbeard....no big whoop. I'm gathering from his posting here that Fleroo must factor in the ole "flinch factor" in group size measurement when shooting sumpin heavier than a 22 LR!! lol

Very little is worse than a 3.5" 12 gauge

Never shot anything larger than a 06. Not a fan of recoil, even the 06 has more than I like, but after a few practice rounds I get use to it and it doesn’t affect my shooting any. Everyone I knew that bought a 300 magnum the first thing they did after shooting a few rounds off the bench was have a muzzle break installed. My 06 did everything it was ever required to do, including killing a bull elk at 200 yards in Colorado, so have never had a desire to own one.

Very little is worse than a 3.5" 12 gauge Never shot the 3.5” 12 gage. I use a Winchester 1300 12 gage with 3” for turkey and don’t mind it. But what I felt was the brutal, was the same gun in a 20 gage using some of the new 3” turkey loads on the market.

Very little is worse than a 3.5" 12 gauge Have a friend that cracked his nose bridge shootin his 835 with a 3.5" load. I only owned an 835 one year as it's loose construction was noisy/rattled plus 2nd shot recyling wasnt reliable.

That's the reason I use a 10 gauge for waterfowl. 10 gauges are 11 pounds. Try and find a heavy 12 gauge once
