Way back in 1991, I bought one of those rifles the gun salesman called "that cheap little Weatherby." It is a Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Weatherby magnum. That rifle has been to a bunch of Canadian Provinces, a number of western states, and Africa. About half of my stuff in the trophy room was taken with it. I never felt the recoil to be all that tough to handle. I also now have a Mark V in that caliber now. I have also taken game with a 7mm remington magnum, a 7mm Weatherby magnum, and that .416 remington magnum with which I shot the Cape buffalo. Never noticed recoil when shooting at game. Today, my big game hunting days are over. Most of my shooting of centerfire rifles is at deer, and the .257 Roberts is the tool I use for that most of the time. I am still experimenting with the .250-3000 Savage I bought from Big Ken some years back, and have taken deer with it. No problem with getting ammo, as I reload and have plenty of the components. The prettiest rifle I have is the Browning X-bolt Medallion I bought with the Covid stimulus check. It is the first .270 I have ever owned, and is not only nice to look at, but a very accurate rifle to boot. Can a man have too many guns? Well----------

I was in a canoe in a swamp with a friend Duck Hunting, middish-90's right about the time Mossberg came out with the 835. A flock of Geese came over right on the fringe of being considered "skybusting". I tell my buddy to put that 3.5" to good use, and give it a whirl. The barrel was nearly straight up in the air when he pulled the trigger. Long story short, we were both drenched head to toe in nasty swamp water, and lost some gear when the canoe flipped. To top it off. My buddy got fined exiting out of the swamp. He forgot to sign his Federal Duck Stamp. $100

Those 835's are beasts! I would love to run a 12 gauge 3.5" because you get better velocity than the 10 gauge 3.5 but I can't take the recoil of a 7 lb shotgun

My pal is 6'4" 270'ish lb. 15 or so years ago, he bought a 300 RUM. He just had to have it, because everything he does has to be excessive. Never bear, moose, elk hunted, and never will. I went to the range with him to hone in his new purchase. At that time, he spent $70 for a box of cartridges... that looked like a 50 Cal cartridge by the way. His first shot, I specifically watched the recoil, knowing it had to be just as excessive as my buddy is. LOL. IT WAS ! He turned and looked at me and said HOLY $#%& ! 7 shells later, after being sufficiently dialed in, he asked if I wanted to shoot it. I told him he had a better chance of meeting Jesus. And I'm not "small"

The nice thing about the 300 RUM is the ammo came in different power levels just like the 45-70 does. You had your choice between 30-06, 300 Winchester mag, or 300 RUM recoil levels. I would've bought one had they caught on. With my 45-70's everybody thinks I'm blowing my shoulder off but 98% of the time I'm running mild loads. I even commonly hunt with mild loads. A 405 at 1,300 can kill anything that walks but it doesn't beat you up

Didn't realize the RUM ammo was available in different power levels. On my 2020 PA Elk hunt I was with another hunter who shot an elk with a 300 RUM while I was with him. My ears are stil ringing!! lol

Yeah that was the main selling point. But nobody bought the lower power levels so the idea didn't take off. Everyone just bought full house 300 RUM defeating the point
