I try to sight my bolt actions in that way. Generally 3" high at 100 yards gets you where you want to be. I think that puts the 30-06 at a max effective range of 274 yards

I'm sorry I was giving the MPBR. Maximum point blank range. I thought that's what he was referencing

Yeah I can't watch this stuff anymore. I filled my head with enough ballistics, trajectory, holdover, and windage to last me 10 lifetimes. My eyes glaze over anymore

Not even going to watch it based on the comments. LOL My take, if you're Carlos Hathcock (RIP), you may want to account for many different things when trying to take out an NVA general at 1200 clicks. When you're Fleroo settin' a spell in a hunting stand, with his 1950's vintage Marlin 30-30...... F IT !

See some here didn’t do too well in physics!! Yup, speed of sound & bullet speed are darn tough concepts to comprehend!! Factor in distance intercept ……mind boggling!! LOL

I killed a groundhog at 835 yds once, not sure he cared much about the maximum effective range of that 162 grain 7 mag bullet. Lol

what is the maximum effective range of a 40 grain sub sonic 22 r n shot from a 16 inch barrel?

All I know is the maximum effective range of a 45-70 405 grain bullet is whatever distance I can drop it onto the target. Portable artillery

what is the maximum effective range of a 40 grain sub sonic 22 r n shot from a 16 inch barrel? Well considering it's already subsonic coming out the barrel, it's not effective. 🙄

I shoot two different loads/bullets from my .17 Hornet. One is a 20gr bullet with the MV of 3,300fps and the other a 20gr with a MV of 3,775fps.
At 500 yards neither has dropped below 1,150fps….but I doubt they are effective at that distance.

A measured 225 yards with an Ithaca Super Deluxe Deerslayer in 12 gauge with a Foster type rifled slug. Heart shot. Beat that!

Good discussion here which I expected!! Here's the bottomline in all of this: You want your bullet to say "hello" to game BEFORE it hears your gun's bark.....albeit that's the distance point of Maximum Effective Range!!

My own personal max effective range has been decreasing continuously as my eyes get worse.Five years ago,I had 20/20 vision.Today, not so much.I really notice it with a bow.

Contacts are no good if you work in a dusty environment. That's why I gave up on them

A measured 225 yards with an Ithaca Super Deluxe Deerslayer in 12 gauge with a Foster type rifled slug. Heart shot. Beat that! Sounds like a lob shot, or luck, or BOTH No doubt some luck, but back in the days when I made that shot, skill was part of my bag. Did you ever have a BB gun? Remember how you could see the BB and learn "hold over"? Over the last several years, one of my fun activities in the summer is shooting Carpenter Bees with the old Daisy. I can hit about one out of 10? Back in the Foster slug days, and when I still had good eyes, I could see the slug lumbering along at long ranges. I learned over time just about where I needed to aim to hit the target. We did a lot of shooting at longer ranges just for fun. The Ithaca I still have, has a Williams 5D Receiver sight. I used to travel to Ridgway, Pa. years ago to a camp we rented on Mill Creek for gun season. There was a group of cabins, and several hunters. Sunday was sight-in day. We had about a 90 yard range. I always took my Ithaca as a backup gun. One day after several guys had checked their guns, I got the idea to have a little fun. I got the Ithaca out and asked if I could move back about 10 yards, I was sighted in at 100. Of course that created a lot of laughs, but then the bets started. I bet that I could knock a beer can down at 100 yards. It was a sucker bet. All I had to do as slide that slug along the ground under the can and it would jump! Money collected. By the way, for those who do not know, Ithaca only made the Super Deluxe Deerslayer for a couple years, about 1963-65. They continued to make the Deerslayer in later years, but the Super Deluxe had some special features, including very nice trigger, rumor had to be around 4 lbs or slighty less. It came with a very nice select grade walnut stock, recoil pad, sling, Williams Peep, interchangeable Ray Bar front sight.

When I first started hunting I used my Ithaca 16ga. pump with slugs. I think it was 3 or 4 years before I finally got a rifle. I never killed a deer, but I never took a shot. With hindsight I later determined I mis-judged the distance a nice 8 point was from me. Me and he were both in a field and my experience of distance judging was novice at best.
Then first year I bought my rifle was the first buck I took.
