Sounds like a lob shot, or luck, or BOTH
Did you ever have a BB gun? Remember how you could see the BB and learn "hold over"? Over the last several years, one of my fun activities in the summer is shooting Carpenter Bees with the old Daisy. I can hit about one out of 10?
Back in the Foster slug days, and when I still had good eyes, I could see the slug lumbering along at long ranges. I learned over time just about where I needed to aim to hit the target. We did a lot of shooting at longer ranges just for fun. The Ithaca I still have, has a Williams 5D Receiver sight.
I used to travel to Ridgway, Pa. years ago to a camp we rented on Mill Creek for gun season. There was a group of cabins, and several hunters. Sunday was sight-in day. We had about a 90 yard range. I always took my Ithaca as a backup gun. One day after several guys had checked their guns, I got the idea to have a little fun. I got the Ithaca out and asked if I could move back about 10 yards, I was sighted in at 100. Of course that created a lot of laughs, but then the bets started. I bet that I could knock a beer can down at 100 yards. It was a sucker bet. All I had to do as slide that slug along the ground under the can and it would jump!
Money collected.
By the way, for those who do not know, Ithaca only made the Super Deluxe Deerslayer for a couple years, about 1963-65. They continued to make the Deerslayer in later years, but the Super Deluxe had some special features, including very nice trigger, rumor had to be around 4 lbs or slighty less. It came with a very nice select grade walnut stock, recoil pad, sling, Williams Peep, interchangeable Ray Bar front sight.
My Dad used to hunt Eastern VA years ago in a "Buckshot Only" area. I tagged along on several of those cold January hunts but was around 10-11 being just shy of hunting age. Dad had a Browning Belgium A-5 12 ga he bought a "Buck Special" barrel. Man was that set-up a deadly combo on deer with 00 buckshot!! Both Dad's A-5 and Buck Special barrel is in my safe today. Got his ole Browning A-5 reblued & stock finished...looks like new. Not sure what the "Maximum Effective Range" of 00 Buck is?? lol
