And as to whether I know better I have reached a point now after this season that I will personally not use anything lighter than a 30-06 ever again. I dont even want to hunt with anyone who doesn't at least use a 270. Tired of trying to find blood and tired of rodeos. Do I believe in the 300 mag? Well my email for many years has been a300winmagfan@yahoo.com.

No offense intended, but a .300 magnum is way more gun than is needed for one shot kills on whitetail deer. I have kiled elk, moose, caribou, black bears, and grizzly bears with my .300 Weatherby, but will not take one out for deer. I did one time, and that was enough for me. And, for the record, I am a .30-06 fan. Own one .270, but never have used it. My go-to deer rifle, as most of you know, is a .257 Roberts. It isn't the caliber of bullet one shoots that does the job. It is, and always has been, bullet placement. The most powerful rifle will not make up for lack of that.

Understood and no offense taken but precise shot placement is difficult when despite the fact that one is stationary in ones stand every legal game animal that comes past in this state seems to be running. Ah, the woes of the public land hunter. I've gone back to relying on horsepower.

No one says you must take iffy shots.

Then I may as well not hunt. Everything comes past my stand running.

Dont know how just witnessed 2 years of natural movement. Nobody is bothering them. Week before rifle had a doe standing 15yds from me and she walked closer. Until the bear scared her off.

And right here we have exhibit A of what is wrong with internet forums. This is the old "well my experiences obviously apply to everyone else" line of thinking. Or if you prefer, "this is how it goes for me so there's no reason it isn't the same for you".

They do not like open or semi-open places. You may wish to look at the edge's of the thicker brush where deer will stop before they enter open areas.

Cool. I don't do drives. I just happen to hunt public land with a lot of other hunters around.

I took out the "Savage Donor" today. Shooting some 123gr. Nosler seconds over RL-22 powder. H-4350 will likely do better but for a "thin barrel" hunting rifle....it will be great for a grandson!!! BTW......100 yards off a bench of course.
