I picked up a Savage long action rifle yesterday on Gun-broke-now. I still don't get the thinking of "I won" when it cost me $$$$$
However, I got a wood stock rifle with a scope rail in 7MM mag for $200. The caliber will change as I have a nice hunter contour Shield barrel in 6.5x55 Swedish that has been "hanging out" in my shop for several years. I bot the barrel several years ago.....had it on a single shot bolt action Savage and it was very accurate!! I took a Wyoming Antelope with it. I had since swapped to a heavy barrel Shilen in 6.5x55 for use in target and long range groundhog hunting.
My plan is to take the factory finish down to wood and re-finish it. The receiver is blued and my barrel is stainless......but I like that combo. This Savage has an internal box magazine which is better suited for hunting than a single shot.
I'll keep you posted on the rifle progress as I go.

Ok. What are you going to do about the .532" bolt face for the .473" cartridge?

Ok. What are you going to do about the .532" bolt face for the .473" cartridge? Duct Tape. What else? I have to look and see if I have one. Maybe....maybe not. The size I need is .470....same as the 30-06 long action.

Worse yet, that goofy POS 6.5x55 has an offbeat .480" case head. I always thought I irrationally hated that cartridge but now I see that it was entirely rational all along.

Here's the cheat sheet of Savage bolt face sizes. As for your comment on the cartridge being a POS, I have loaded and target shot it out to 1,000 yards. When I missed it wasn't the cartridges fault. This should clear up any confusion:
Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .473 +/- 225 Winchester 22/250 Remington 6mm Norma BR 243 Winchester 250 Savage 260 Remington 6.5/284 Norma 7/08 Remington 284 Winchester 300 Savage 308 Winchester 338 Federal 35 Remington 358 Winchester
6 & 6.5 Creedmoor 6.5 Lapua 6XC
Long actions with a bolt face .DIA of .470 +/- 220 Swift 6mm Remington 240 Weatherby Mag 257 Roberts 25-06 Remington 6.5x55 Swedish 270 Winchester 7x57 Mauser 7x64 Brenneke 280 Remington 30/06 Springfield 8mm Mauser 338/06 A Square 35 Whelen

I load most calibers (when a jacketed bullet is called for) with Hornady's. They are quality bullets without the quality price.

And don't take it personally but I hate almost all "x55" and "x57" cartridges equally. I do admit to a soft spot I can't shake for the 8x57 though but not enough to make me ever want another. Short action or long action only. In betweens suck big time.

I've had no issues using a .473 bolt face shooting the 6.5x55. In fact, the actual brass base of the Lapua brass I use is .475 in diameter. The 6.5mm bullets have one of the top BC's of all the calibers, and one of the least felt recoils of all cartridges. A 140gr. bullet at 2900fps (yes.....2900) will kill just about any animal in North America.
Of course, it's not wise to push those velocites in the early 1900 built Mausers. But modern action rifles can stand the pressures of pushing these velocities.
Your hate of an inanimate object is "interesting."

The 6.5 Swede is simply the worst of a bad diameter. They will literally bounce off deer. It's pretty sad really. Are they all out of 25'06 barrels or something that you had to resort to this?

RL-22 Hornady 140 gr. SST 48 gr. OAL 2.120 Group Size 1.5" 2764 2768 2682 2698 2709 Average 2724Std. Dev. 39 The above is the 140gr. Hornady (as stated above). A 140gr. bullet is a 140gr. bullet and driven at those velocities will kill any whitetail on the planet. I took this Antelope with the cartridge in WY at about 175yds. Complete pass thru and the Antelope dropped like a bag of bricks. Me thinks you don't have much experience with various calibers in rifle or handgun.

I picked up my donor Savage rifle. Got home and took the barreled action out. Clamped it in my barrel vise....put on the Savage nut wrench.....two whacks and I now have a Savage long action ready for my Shilen barrel!!
Anyone interested in a factory Savage barrel in 7mm Mag? Previous owner drilled 'n tapped barrel for open sights. Hey.....that's gotta be worth......$2.39?

Nope. I'm going in the opposite direction. I have my 35 Whelen when I need to hunt Bear or above and I'm going small and light recoil with everything else. Just bought a 22-250 yesterday. I'm setting it up for Pronghorn in the Fall.

I got the barrel head-spaced for the 6.5x55. I had a scope and rings but I needed to order a scope base for it. So, the scope base is on it's way, along with a can of Davcon plastic steel to do the necessary bedding. I do have to order a pair of pillars as this model was just screwed to the wooden stock. Also it needs some barrel channel sanding to free float the barrel.....and the entire stock will get sanded (remove existing ugly stuff) and re-finished.
I have a bench top drill press.....so I may get energetic and jewel the bolt. Whooo.....Hoooo!!!

I've jeweled bolts already with just a Dremel tool, polishing compound, and a pencil eraser.
