And just to compare, here's a pic of another Savage 110E that is the same stock and finish as what I started out with.

After two coats of a clear finish. It's amazing how much the wood draws in the clear finish. I think this will be a 4 coat minimum. If you look at the top pic right behind the bolt cutout on the wrist, you can see where the wood has "sucked in" the second coat. The entire first coat looked like that in under a minuet. This one takes maybe 2 minutes.

All done. Next step is to the range to get sighted in and see what load works best.

I like your nice neat work area 😁 I work in what I've always called "organized clutter." Don't move or take anything......'cause I know exactly where everything is at!! (I do clean up and get very organized on occasion......but then I feel I'm not getting anything accomplished!!!)

I took it to the range today....I'll post a pic later.....and once I got it dialed in it shot very well. I was shooting Nosler 123gr. factory blem bullets (my reloads) over RL-22. The barrel shot well years ago so I didn't expect it to shoot bad. IMR-4895 will do better than RL-22......but I got a bunch of RL-22 on hand.
On thing I did notice is that I've got the stock so smooth that it's easy for the stock to slip enough to toss off your shot. I've never checkered a stock....and don't wanna do that as it requires far to much small motor skills that I just don't have. Maybe a stippling would be better......maybe a summer project!!

I found that the finish on this rifle is very smooth.[ To smooth in fact. Like I was in my 20's ]I'm not gonna checker this rifle as the whole intent is to get a good shooting, half-way looking decent rifle with the lower felt recoil of the 6.5x55. So, after some range time I decided to slap on some gripy "stuff". The stuff around the pistol grip is a rubber type material....and the forearm is just plain old skaters tape. Looks?-----Meh. Gripping ability?---- Wonderful. Weather hold up?----we shall see. These tape's will peel right off and have no effect on the underlying finish. But.....if the rifle is "squriming" around in your hand when you're attempting to shoot.....that just can't be good!! Here's some before 'n after and a pic of my skill in making the grip wrap:

Wife and I were away visiting her cousin.....and they are very nice people to visit for a few days. However, I was giving some thought to my wood finish on the Savage, and decided to pull off the hardware and those "grip strips" of black I put on and put on some coats of True-Oil. True-Oil has always provided a finish that gives a sufficient grip on other rifles that I have applied it to.
Should end up being a better looking and functioning rifle!!!

Good call on making the grip tape disappear. That was beyond tacky. You're still left with a Savage action in 6.5mm which is rather puny in the grand scheme. But to each his own.

Wasn't there some famous African hunter that used a 6.5 pretty successfully on elephants?

Stunt shooters have always been around. 6.5's do make nice groundhog rifles.

I thought it was "Karamojo" Bell, so I looked it up. Sure enough: chuckhawks.com/bell_elephants.htmActually, as I remembered it, Bell used mostly the 7x57 Mauser, but also used a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 6.5x54. Every so often I have a pause in my CRAFT syndrome and can come up with another UBI.

Wasn't there some famous African hunter that used a 6.5 pretty successfully on elephants? Yes. I've read comments about the guy. Can't remember his name. All he proved was that any reasonable bullet with the right shot placement would kill an elephant. I wouldn't go after an elephant with a 6.5 caliber. I want big, deep penetrating stuff for something like that. OTOH.....I'm never going elephant hunting either. UPDATE: I did apply about 4 coats of True-Oil to the Savage stock. Got rid of the black stick-on's and the rifle looks much nicer and now has good purchase for shooting!!

Big and slow is about as bad as small and fast. My knock on big and slow is I want to be able to reach out across a field or up a powerline. And magnums work as well at 40 yards as a 45-70 but big/slow dont cut it at 400 yards.

Big game like cover. If a game animal is going out in the open they are usually going a bazillion miles an hour. At that speed they are tough to hit. For deer or bear I'm usually set up where a shot is no longer than 150 yards. I have no need for a 84mm Boom'-n-Klasure.
