I had a low recoil load, that killed deer. In one side and out the other. Boom, dead.

A load or cartridge is anything you want to make it. If a 308 is going at 2600, so be it. If the 06 is going at 2600, so be it. It's all in what the hunter wants, and how they perform. I used to max everything out, back in the day. Max kills the same as a reduced load, pretty much, and my shoulder thanked me for it.

Pulling spark plug wires is fine as long as you're keeping the action at sub 150 yards. Sub 100 is preferable. But I'm certainly no fan of it. I feel if one needs to pull spark plugs then one simply needs a lesser cartridge to begin with.

You'll never make a 220 Swift and elk gun, but you can make the 06 kill both.

I've loaded the '06 "down" for groundhogs before. A 125 grain bullet at 3,100 fps. Once again, no plug wires were pulled.
PS, I remember loading 110's in the 30-06 too. Worked great for chucks but I kept them truckin' at 3400 or better.

A decade or so ago I was using a Ruger No.1A in 270 Win for deer. I hunt the mountains meaning 65-75 yards is a long shot. Shot a 130 gr. bullet at around 3000+ fps. As time went on I realized I didn't need that kind of power (read blood-shot meat) so I loaded the 130's down to about 2800 fps. Not much of a decrease but it saved meat. I've done the same thing with the 'o6 and 165's at 2550 fps. When they were younger I loaded my 2 nephew's 30-06s down to 2300 fps with 150 gr. 30-30 flat-nose bullets to turn it into a 30-30 Win. in regard to recoil. Those rounds killed deer dead and are still being used today by my brother.

Years ago I took a co-worker along on a doe hunt in my favorite spot. The farm with the cattle shed in the hillside meadow. It was a frosty morning that we spent up in the woods. At noon we went down to the shed and sat against the stone foundation in the sun.He had a custom .300 magnum,I had a Marlin 30-30.As we were having lunch a line of doe came trotting across the opposite hillside.I had seen this before and told him to wait until they stopped before entering the woods.I told him to take one on the right and I'll take one on the left.He was to shoot first. He stood to see over some brush,I stayed sitting. When he fired he slipped on wet grass and almost fell and fired again.I saw the one I shot at hunch up and run up hill and disappear in weeds. We went over there and I followed blood to the one I shot at.He didn't find anything to the right but decided the one dead doe was the one he shot at.I didn't say any thing because he seemed desperate to bring home a deer shot with that custom .300 mag.We both got venison from it.

I don't care a bit about blood shot meat. I stay behind the shoulder. And I like to run every cartridge fast. I adhere to the Roy Weatherby philosophy. But of course I do give Elmer Keith his due as well.

Awesome. I didn't. I like high velocity with a bullet that sheds weight or I like a big slow bullet

I like intact shoulders. Lol Odd comment. Considering I'm talking about cartridges in general and how I like them pushed on the hotter side. I could just as easily be talking about the 223 and 243 as I could be the big boomers.

You do need to get in touch with Victor, Muab. He can help you. Dave, Larry, and I all have that lower back problem and Victor keeps us vertical.

I'm weighing my options Muttley. Had an MRI last week and it shows a herniated disc... Have another apt coming with a "specialist". We'll see. No fun. I'm keeping your guy in mind. However, the silver lining in this is I have a new stand at the cabin named after me; about a three minute walk from the cabin door. Could only hunt it for about 2-3 hours at a time. Hunted it the Thursday night and last two days of the season. Limp out in the morning at six, back about nine. Limp out about three, back at dark. Took about 5 "hunts", but on the last day at 4:15 I shot a small one... regardless of the size it was a satisfying hunt as I had scouted the area and knew they were running it, so it wasn't just "poke and hope". The boy now calls it "The Gimp stand". confused-smiley-013 Muab

I have Meralgia Paresthetica. Some days I can walk, other days not so much. Depends if its flaring or not. There were days this season where I climbed a mountain and others that I hunted in sight of the truck.

Muab, BEFORE you let them cut you, try Victor. He is not expensive either.

"Cutting" is the absolute last option on my list Muttley; and I do mean absolute last option. Rest assured, Victor is on my "list".

Constant lower back pain.. :/ On recoil.. if you want to improve your shooting ability, downsize. Many years back I got into bench rest shooting, handloading, and long range deer hunting. Custom .30-06. I settled on H414, 168gr HPBT Sierras, with about a medium load of powder. I would go to the range with about 40 rounds of different loads and bullets. One day on the way home from the range I had a splitting headache. I got to thinking about it after seeing a slow motion video of a guy shooting a .30-06 off the bench. The video showed how violently his head and body were knocked out of shape by recoil. I decided shooting 30-40 rounds on the bench was giving me a concussion! My brain was being bruised as it slammed around inside my skull with each pull of the trigger. :/ I thought about it. And when I had thought about it long enough, I bought a .270 and sold the 06. Never looked back.

Glenn, you make an excellent point. I use my Win .308 in deer season when I need to. When I range shoot for long distance I shoot a Savage barreled in 6.5x55 Swede. I can shoot 50 to 75 rounds and not experience any recoil issues.

The 375 in this thread gave me a mild concussion. My 300 magnum would concuss me too. My 35 Whelen does not but I don't shoot a box at a time either.

Wonder what that would do to a 90 pound doe? Kill it by putting two holes in her of about 375 caliber. Smaller cartridges with bullets designed to expand on light game would perform much better.
