Ok, this may seem like an odd question.....but I recall when I was a young man, probably in my late teens or early twenties, reading either Outdoor Life or F&S, an article on deer hunting about how to "move deer" when you were hunting by yourself. Now, I believe this hunter was out west, so it wasn't here in Pa.. But I still recall this and still find it\found it to be interesting. I don't know how successful it would be, but like playing the lottery, you can't win if you don't play.
So this rifle hunter was sitting there with a slingshot, and a bag with steel marble size balls. He was sling-shooting 'em probably 100 yards over a brushy area, and the brush was at least anywhere from 4' to 6' high. He would aim his slingshot "shots" from left to right to cover (I'm going off of over decades of memory here) maybe a 35-degree swath of area. He would sling this steel out and then move it in a bit closer....if I recall taking about ten to maybe at most fifteen shots, then wait ten minutes, then do it again. The noise would be enough to spook any deer that were laying there and he had patterned the area so he had a "chance" of the deer coming his way.
So, my question is.....is this a legal method to use here in Pa.? I can't attest for "is it a good method" or not. Just asking if it's legal?

Interesting. Slingshots are not a legal hunting device but can be used as a weapon so I suspect having one in your possession while hunting would be illegal?

I question if this really would do anything. Heck, what does a deer do when acorns are falling?
Years ago we had a doe bedded ay 700 yds. She had a large rock sitting beside her, maybe 3-5 yds away. We put a 162 Hornady right into the center of that rock, she got up looked at it a while and bedded right down. Her fawns never moved.

This method works best when hunting an arroyo or canyon out west, Dave. I do use a modification of it here in PA when driving a laurel patch. I carry a bag of pepples with me and every so often will throw one uphill or downhill into laurel patches into which I can't see very far. It has worked in moving deer on occasion. Two years ago I moved a herd of ten does and a six point past my buddy dave while doing that.
As to the slingshot, I can't see why it would not be legal to carry one while hunting. You are not using it as a weapon to kill game, but only to throw rocks or steel shot with. I might suggest ordinary marbles. They would be cheaper than steel bearing sized shot. Now, we wait for one of the experts on game law to chime in. smileys-whistling-823718

There was a group around here who used firecrackers to move critters out of the thick stuff on the river hills.

Cant see where it would be any differant than what Mutt does. I throw ricks sticks or whatever I can get ahold of on drives between me and the other driver in thick stuff. Just another noise to make the deer think there is someone or something moving thru.

Yeah, obviously your carrying your "real" weapon be it a firearm or a bow\crossbow so who would think you would be using a slingshot and steel balls (or better yet marbles) to attempt to kill game. (However....if someone walks in and finds 500 marbles around....you have just "given up" your secret honey hole!!) OTOH, I don't think I'd want to fool around with fireworks out in the woods. I don't want to be the guy who makes the national news as "Hunter catches woodlands on fire while attempting to move deer with fireworks." Yeah......that guy would be know far and wide.....like forever.

It would also be considered littering on public land if you are using steel or marbles.
On the issue of carrying a different weapon. It is interesting for sure. Air pistols are not legal to hunt with and I think it is illegal to carry one while hunting as it is not a legal device. I would assume sling shots would be as well but who knows. We can carry knives which are not a legal hunting device in PA, but they are a legal hunting device in other states.

I used to carry an old arrow with a cherry bomb taped on the point. Used the tactic more than once to turn deer and also to wake up my buddy after a late night at the beer hall.  |

I got my first buck because my dad put a drive on by chucking rocks and dirt clods into a thick ravine. Moved the buck right by me.

I was thinking about this a week or so ago and thought it would make "good fodder" for discussion. I kept thinking...for the life of me, I could not see where it would be "not legal." But then....I also know that the older I get.....the more there is that I just don't know!!! That's the part that will usually get me into trouble. Dave |

I guess if you want to avoid the potential for a littering fine you could use pebbles. A slingshot throws them just fine and they would have the same effect.

All this talk about "moving" deer reminds me of a story I read back when I was young. This fellow was tired of the local hunting club marching through his hunting territory. Apparently they drove this property quite consistently as far as time of day goes. The hunter thought of a way to thwart the success of their drives. He attended yard sales, auctions, flea markets etc. and purchased old, wind-up alarm clocks. The evening before the first day of hunting season, he strategically placed the clocks out in a line out in front of the drivers. He placed these lines of clocks every so often (I don't recall the distance) and staggered the alarms so that the farthest line sounded off first, then the second and so on and so on. I don't recall if his idea worked or not but that should have at least got the drivers wondering what was going on.

Back in the early 70s when I first took two buds along to camp for buck season, the one who served in the Marines until 1968, had an idea for chasing deer out of some thick, remote areas.
Watched several groups of deer head into a 30+ acre patch of pines about 800 yards across the hollow and never come out again. He opined that a few rounds of HE from a 60mm mortar would make for a pretty good "driving aid" in flushing out such deer havens.
Might've upset the guy who owned the pines a bit, but I figure it would've worked for a year or two, until the pines had been reduced to 30 acres of match sticks.

Sure hope it's not illegal..I've been doing it for well, since I was a kid. Stones work as well as commercial rounds..and quite a bit cheaper  |

I don't think a LEO want's to "go on record" one way or the other on such a matter. Perhaps there is too much grey area here such as what type of projectile is being hurled, where it's being hurled to (inside a safety zone while the hunter is outside the zone....that would be a violation I would think). What if the hunter is hurling a stone into the area where another hunter is? I guess I'm attempting to put myself in the shoes of a LEO looking at this post. I'd probably think that there are 106 different situations that could be though of, plus others that haven't even been thought of....so I'm not gonna say anything in case I ever come across a "crazy" situation where I have to issue a citation because I'd be foolish not to. But....maybe I'm all wet. Dave |

I read where Colorado has banned the use of drones for locating game. I think it was Denny that said he saw one flying overhead in the hallway at the sportsman's show last week. I saw it also and thought at the time that someone was gambling with a lawsuit if that thing came down among the myriad of people crammed into that space.
