I think for every 4 hvac techs that retire only one replaces them. It's going to be good when the economy gets going again. Then I can listen to the people on facebook complain that they can't get a plumber or hvac guy. Well there is too much demand for just a few guys. I said this years ago, and it's coming true, most of the trade jobs will be filled by immigrants. They WANT to work at the dirty jobs. My brother had a roof put on last year, the entire crew was from Costa Rica. They worked for a local company that has a very good reputation. My roofing crew 10 years ago spoke PA Dutch. Lol

Money will drive the economics of trade jobs. Try and find a good finish carpenter to do a job at your house!! As the talent pool for filling trade jobs go "elsewhere" the bidding for their types of services will increase. That will attract more to the field. Economics 101.
If a carpenter was making $40K 20 years ago, and now because of demand he can make $125K, guess who's not going to college?

Vo-Tech is a better idea than it ever was. I did it but I went for autobody and I've never worked in autobody in my life. Oh well

I know there are feast and famine with about everything, Stroupy. But HVAC work should never wane all that much, other than the obvious "'tween" seasons when neither A/C nor Furnaces run all that much. People will not forego heat, and most won't forego the comfort of A/C, just because they are paying $1.50 more for eggs over last year.
If you're just starting out in business, find a mentor. Learn some "ropes" of the business trade. That way you don't cut yourself short. And you can charge the fair going market rate for any particular area. Which certainly deviates greatly.

Mine last July were from Venezuela. They are faster than lightning, but lack in 2 areas. 1, They forego the "attention to detail" that many reputable roofers do not. 2, Their clean-up SUCKS! It's all about "stick-n-jab" with the latinos. Get in, Get out. But I've put on over 50 roofs in my lifetime. So I kept things in check. Much to their chagrin at times.

On roofing....you gotta be careful of who's doing the work. If the contractor is using his employees or if he's sub-contracting. If the job goes south the contractor points at the sub. But the sub came from a tiny town in Texas where they have no phones. Good luck with that!!

I had a roof put on and the two guys were white, spoke english and lived locally. It took them 3 days to put it on, including sheeting, but they were 2/3 of the cost of the bigger companies that bring in 8 mexicans and do it in a day.

We don't have Mexicans but we do have Amish, which I refer to as bearded Mexicans.Great work ethic but I've seen some pitiful work.At least the one crew doing metal roofs, only put one nail in each end of the perlins.I've seen entire slopes blow off.

That is correct. It's almost like they are the "migrant workers" that local farms employ to ick produce. They have no ties/commitments to local communities. No lifelog friends/family/acquaintances in the locale they are working. Therefore, they are not overly concerned with a reputation. Get in/Get out.

I can't speak to your Amish and why their roofs blow off. But technically, a nail on each end of you furring strip is all you really need to hold it in place temporarily. THEN, those sheets will (well should) be battened down with a 2 1/2" sheet metal screw every foot or so down the roof.

Problem is,they use 1 1/2" screws on the metal.

A few years back one of these roof workers, a Mexican from Texas, was robbed at a local hotel. He did not want to report it because he was an illegal. Someone else who witnessed the robbery calls the cops as it was in progress. But the fellow did not want to get involved.....but that wasn't his choice.
