Colton got his buck in PA this morning. He was off from school today with Fall break. The "tracking" dog wasn't really necessary as the shot was perfect, but he wanted to get her practice.

I don't know which I like better, the buck or the tracking dog. Too cute!

Anybody been out? I have been in Italy and arrived back in the states yesterday. Plan on setting a few stands tomorrow for the upcoming rutcation in November. I probably won't get a chance to hunt till next Saturday the 28th.

I killed a nice 15" inside spread 8 point Thursday evening. I watched him for nearly 45 minutes before I got a shot at about 20 yards. Recovery was less than 40 yards. I really didn't want to end my season so early but he is one of my nicest bucks and I still have lots of work on our cabin before the snow piles up.

I killed a nice 15" inside spread 8 point Thursday evening. Sweet. Congrats on the buck. I was able to sneak out for 2 hours tonight. 2 does seen. Picked up three new shooter bucks on camera but all three are moving at night.

My wife filled another of her antlerless tags tonight. She killed a button buck that was just over 50# fd. We try to shoot only does, but I've made the same mistake a few times too. She has really taken to archery hunting and gets as excited as I used to as a young hunter.

Shot a nice 10-point this morning. It was on fire with bucks everywhere. I actually climbed down at 11:00 and moved to a trail about 80 yards from my stand where I seen all of the bucks cruising and shot him from the ground at 11:30.

Certainly looks like a mountable fine buck!! One of my better ones for sure, but I just had the skull capped. No use mounting them if there is no room to put them.

I sat yesterday morning as well just to do some observation. Like the day I shot mine, the morning started off slow then picked up by 9am. Late mornings have been the best for movement for me. Between 10 - 1 has been the ticket. This parallels my experience of years past. Many folks take a mid day break but mid day can be exceptional hunting during the rut. I saw 4 bucks yesterday including a 9 pointer with about the same frame as the one I shot.

We had a pretty good weekend.I climbed the same tree where Jordan shot his bear and he hunted about 6 miles away in Elk county.Just before 4:00 I see a buck sneaking in from my left and I immediately recognized him.He started off the year with 4 points on one side and the other side came strait down over his face.Unfortunately, the good side was completely busted off but he was mature and that's all I care about.I debated shooting him and by the time I decided to kill him,he was on my weak side at about 22 yards. The hit looked perfect and he ran behind me in a huge patch of autumn olive.I heard him stop and thought I heard him go down.I climbed down at 5:30 because it's a bugger getting one out of this spot.My arrow was lodged in a dead ash tree with good blood. It'sthick that finding blood is tough but I knew I heard him go down.To my surprise,he wasn't where I thought he was so I decided to go wait for Jordan and come back later. It was getting dark as I was pulling into the spot where he parked when my phone lit up.Jordan said he just grunted in a big buck and thought the hit was good and heard the deer crash.I told him to stay in the stand until I got there so he could show me where the buck was standing. When I got there,we immediately found blood and not 50 yards away, lay a slammer of a mountain buck.It was late by the time we got him out so I waited til morning to find the one I killed, which proved to me more of a challenge than I originally thought it would be.
