Yes, that is no fun, especially in thick laurel.
If you have a cell signal, you could always use Google Maps.

Hunted all day Saturday & today till noon. Saw few hunters & heard far less shooting compared to normal years. Of course, wind gusts 35 mph likely dampered sound carrying.
Cut one huge track in the snow & followed about 1.5 mile till it went in thick swamp. It was getting near dark Sat nite so I backed out. By size of track my guess bear was 300 lbs plus. Oh well...bear season's in all first week of Regular Deer which opens Saturday. I expect a decent kill then with likelyhood of more hunrers in the woods. Based on camp occupancy...sure seems like not many are hunting anymore...least Regular Bear Season.

With recent weather, and not much mast, females went to den?

With recent weather, and not much mast, females went to den? I'd say for certain. Shooting was almost nonexistent. Only guy I talked to that cut tracks was tracking a 400+ pounder at Mill Creek

My buddy was hunting up in Mill Creek area above Hogback Trail pull off. He said there was 3 trucks parked along the entire Hogback/Big Hollow areas. They normally drive that side of mtn & take at least a bear or 2 off. He didn't hear any shooting all day Saturday. Broken Arrow Camp & couple other big clubs normally hunt that area. Overall....this year seemed the fewest hunters that ive seen in over 50 years bear hunting the area. Even the huge Ogdonia Camp was empty. Not sure what's going on??
Looking at Bear Harvest Map....higest concentration of Sullivan County Bears have been taken in Davidson Twp(southern Sullivan County).

Yeah I seen Ogdonia was empty when I came through Friday. And the Camp I used to go to (my inlaws place) had three hunters. Three. Twenty years ago we'd have twenty guys for Bear season

I know around here we had very spotty mast and it seemed to drop later than usual for some reason. If there was corn, that's where the bear seemed to concentrate and I believe that may be why the early season kill was so big.We got lucky and found a shelter wood cut that dropped a ton of acorns and it seemed to have held 4 or 5 different bears in a relativeley small area.Another area about 1 mile from there also had a decent mast crop but it was more spread out. There were several bears in there as well.My usual taxidermist is only doing deer as of last year so I had to take ours to a different guy.I showed up saturday and he was gonna turn me away.He said he got 30 in for the early season and didn't have time for any more because the deer haul was big.As I was leaving,he agreed to do it as long as I caped it myself.Prior to the season, there was no shortage of bears in these parts.
Pressure was way down this year for some reason. We usually have several big groups driving everything like a swarm of locusts.I didn't see or hear anything about them. The one camp up the road from me had 4 or 5 guys and they usually have in excess of 20.I think it just comes down to the fact that hunting is dying a faster death than most of us thought. The hunting itself is better than ever but the excitement isn't the same as it used to be.
