Congrats on the birds guys. The turkey hunters at my club have been slaying them this year. 9 gobblers taken already! More turkeys shot this spring than deer last fall. This is first for my club.

There is a bunch of gobblers this year in the area. There has been 4 birds taken off of the place here which is the most that I am aware of.

Nice work. That is a heck of a poke with a 20. Many people think if you don't hear em at first light, there are none there. We've killed at least four if not five birds over 45 yards with a 20ga and either fed heavyweight 7 or tss loads and every one dropped like a concrete cloud. In my experience a 20 ga is a far more effective gun than a 12 ga if you use the right choke and shell. The big advantage, not to mention recoil is weight. It's far easier to sit motionless with a 5 lb gun in the ready position than an 8 lb gun. I went out to listen this morning and they were hammering in a spot that I haven't heard a single gobble all spring.

Seeing quite a few single hens down here as well now. I am sure they are starting to sit good. The hunting should be good here this coming week. You guys where spring is behind us may have another week or two until they start sitting good.

I am headed to Ohio tomorrow to hunt some public ground Saturday. Planning on running and gunning state forest land. Me too! Maybe we will run into each other. LOL. Reports I am hearing is that the hens are sitting and the gobblers are lonely. I would guess that means we won't hear a bird.

Well, two more days without gobbling. None at all. This is the quietest spring gobbler season I can remember. This is strange, but even with no gobbling, I have actually seen at least one gobbler every morning that I hunted. Yesterday, I could have ended the season with a legal bird. Unfortunately it was a hen with a 4 or 5 inch beard. I am not against taking a bearded hen, but just out of range, strutting his heart out was a huge gobbler whose beard dragged on the ground. When she walked on, he followed her. That was my chance for the day. This morning I watched one following a hen, but had no success in getting him to leave her for me, no matter how sexy I sounded. About five minutes after he went out of sight, I adjusted my position and heard those dredded alarm putts. A Jake had worked his way in behind me, silently, of course. You can't outdraw the fastest gun in the west. If I didn't have any bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all. I might get out again next week. Honeydo stuff for the first couple of days following Mothers' Day.

Just got back from a public land hunt in Ohio. Pretty good action overall. Heard two from he roost, both wouldn't cooperate. Made a move to another valley and had one going good. He came on a string until he hit about 60 yards then hung up for a bit then headed the other way. I never laid eyes on him as he was just over the lip of the bench I was overlooking. A few sporadic gobbles after that. 88 degrees in SE Ohio at noon. Man it was hot!

Sounds like you had a good hunt Gene. Guys at the club took 3 more gobblers on Saturday. 12 total, it's crazy good!

Everyone in my area cant believe how quiet it has been. Wonder whats the difference between the western part compared to the east?
