The PFBC is closing the Oswayo Hatchery in Coudersport, Potter County and the Bellefonte Hatchery, Centre County to reduce operating costs by $9 million over the next four years. Both hatcheries combined produce approximately 785,000 adult trout for stocking each year. www.fish.state.pa.us/newsreleases/2013press/reduce-costs.htmThe Bellefonte hatchery had over $3 million in improvements done just a few years ago, seems odd that it would be one of the hatcheries to close? This is only the beginning of big changes in the PA trout program in the future in my opinion.

I can see closing the one in Oswayo, but Bellefonte? Very centrally located, it seems.
It is sad that these pension plans and healthcare costs are effecting things we never thought of.
But hey, these things were "promised", and we can't go back on those promises, now can we?
BULLFEATHERS! LOL

Oswayo is right down the road from me, that really sucks. I wonder what they are going to do with all that land they have. they have some awesome land that I am sure someone will lease up and post. I love to hunt on there land for grouse, I have a few special covers that I would hate to lose.

Rober, unless they sell it, you'll still be able to hunt there. I'm thinkiing that parcel was about 1000 acres, right?

I am speechless. A state-run put and take stocking program that is running in the red! Huh!

I could be wrong but i believe it is about 3000 acres. It is a real big parcel, alot of real nice timber and agriculture. They own 3 mountains and the land in between which some of it goes back a mile or more.

They may do some land trades with game to ensure it stays open; but they won't "sell it" to the public. My guess is they will develop their gas rights if possible tho.

Possibly the PGC can acquire with the excess gas revenue coming in.
I rarely fish for "stocked trout" but know quite a few who do. My guess some of these type activities can be successfully outsourced with cost savings.i

The PGC stocks pheasants there now so hopefully this will happpen. It is a great piece of property. I did check and it is about 1250 acres. I thought it was more then that.

That project was probably on the books a good while ago and was bid out a few years back.
Things sometimes change rapidly and companies or agencies get caught in a bind in a hurry and have to abandon what was a good program or facility.
No other explanation other than gross mismangement, and a state agency would never mismanage anything, right?

Not a fisherman and really don't care for the stocking program or the PGC pheasant program either, for that matter. These proposed closings will draw attention to the high costs and the fact that the bitter legislators are attempting to strangle the two agencies by not allowing license fee increases, despite the high costs. Those that fish for the trout should pay for the trout and it should be done by hiking the fee! It is not hard to understand and it is plain frustrating it can't be done. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Are they so inept to invest all the $$$ and then close it? Or, are they doing this to create noise?

My guess is that this project was started probably 7 or 8 years ago, progessed to the bidding process, the economy tanked, pension system problems reared their ugly head and they had to take extreme action.
But thats just my thinking on it all.

The physical structure is there. Lease it or sell it to a private operator. The problem is the state worker union contracts. That would be eliminated.

I wonder if having some private operators is a conflict of interest? On the positive side, maybe they could come up with some new ideas for the system as a whole too?
