Yeah, and, was it 30 shots before it lost power? Incredible for the day.

The Giardonni Rifle Merriweather Lewis carried is owned by the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center. It is currently on display in the Chief of Staff of the Army's Hallway exhibit in the Pentagon. I was involved in acquiring the rifle for the Army about five years ago and it is an amazing piece of engineering considering the simplicity of its parts. For the infantryman to pump the bladder was 1500 strokes with a hand pump though. I have had the pleasure to fire Ernie Cowens reproduction and it gernerates about 450 fps at the muzzle. MG Hal Nelson fired it at the Cumberland County Game lands range and hit a man size target at 100 yards. Pretty neat!!

Knew they'd lugged an air rifle along, didn't recall the "why" part. Neat presentation.

Really interesting! I Have always been amazed by the power of air rifles. I had a Crosman .22 caliber when I was a kid. I could pump it about 10 times and still get the pump handle closed.. it got harder to close with each pump. It would easily shoot through a 1 inch pine board at about 50 feet. I had a couple old pine board boxes that I used to use for rabbit box traps and also target backstops.
That old Crosman was the demise of a lot of Starlings..
I still have it but the sear and seals are worn out.
