My older son,he is 50 now,has taken a few with his flint lock, but younger son has just started using one this past season . They both have Lyman Deerstalkers. Both of them enjoyed the past season and had a very good time even with missing their game. Shooting at the range is different then in the woods the younger one found out?

That is the key.To many people want instant success and don,t enjoy the hunt unless they score.I never get mad at my failures.I just see what I can do to improve.I enjoy the hunt wether I score or not.

Yes, the enjoyment is in the hunt and enjoying time afield with friends. Practicing at the range is a good thing, but certainly different than what happens in the woods.

I have always tried to rest off a tree or knee while hunting with a flinter. Only ever missed once, and got her on the second shot, as she watched me reload, and fire the second shot.

I can count on one hand the number of miss's that I have had. And that was just day one.

About 18 years ago I pulled my flintlock out the week before the season to shoot it.I couldn't hit anything with it so I put a harris bipod on it lol.The first drive a bunch of doe and a buck come right up to me and stop broadside at about 25 yards.I had a solid rest, squeezed the trigger and bang flop. With a solid rest I hit that buck right in the white patch of the throat and was aiming behind the shoulder.I put the gun in the safe and went several years without hunting with it.I just figured that I had no business shooting at a live animal with it.Then about 7 or 8 years ago,I picked up an RMC.It balances nice and goes off not much different than a rifle.I wouldn't call myself Davy Crocket but a standing deer under 65 yards is now pretty much dead.
