I have 3 different brands of 100 grain bullets,4 different powders and 3 different brands of primers. Some thing i have never done was to try to push for maximum speed and try to be really accurate. I am going to try this now?

Ahhh...yes, the 243 Winchester with 100 gr. bullets. Only one load needed: 42.0 grs. of IMR 4350 Muab

I shoot reloads using 100 gr Sierra Spitzers with 36.0 grs of 4320.I used to shoot 100 gr Remington core-lokts.I found these spitzers have a flatter trajectory. Both were good for minute of deer. Some competition shooters claim "hot" loads in .243's shorten barrel life. They are shooting thousands of rounds between barrel replacements.Their definition of a worn out barrel is much tighter than mine.

I watched quite a few deer die in front of a .243 over the past 5 years.Nothing has impressed me as much as an 85gr barnes tts in front of a hot load of Hogdon superperformance. As a matter of fact,I was completely unimpressed with the .243 until I loaded up some ttsx's.I pretty much started using them in every rifle I own.I loaded up some 130gr ttsx's for my son's .308 this year and couldn't have been more pleased.

A .243 barrel is good for 2,000 rounds. Probably 1,500 with hot loads. If you shoot 200 shots a year you'll only get 7 years out of that barrel.

H 4831SC has been proven to be one of the most stable and accurate powders made, from 30-378 to 243 winchester. I dont think I will ever load another powder.

I am at least the third owner of a '58 Win Model 70 .243.I think I've averaged 30 rounds a year for 25 years.I know one owner used it for groundhogs. The fore end has the finish worn from taking shooting rests in the field.I'm guessing its had close to 2000 rounds through it.In the past I have shot 1 inch 3 shot groups.Lately its been 2 inch groups. It could be my 73 year old eyes (I'm developing cataracts).I've also shot 5 inch groups if I haven't shot for months. Most of my shooting is just prior to hunting.

I would like to get some H-4831sc but being retired money is scarce? ?? Most of my supplies are from building them up a little at a time ! I had a 243 i used in the 90's and had it shooting very good. Gave it away? I doubt if i would ever use it for deer hunting but it is a thing to play with! I like my 30 caliper fire arms!

Then once you "fry" the first barrel, just order another one on-line, and wrench it on yourself. I've headspace a pile of Savage barrels and it's no harder than changing a tire on a car. You just need the go gauge and your in business. Oh....a barrel too!! smileys-whistling-823718

I've had two Savage .243's. Nice rifles. I have my 6.5 Swede that I built. I purchased the single shot Savage bolt action then added the barrel and stock and "stuff" from there. I shoot this one long range....like 1,000 yards. Neat stuff!!! I also have a Savage .17 Hornet. Really accurate rifle. Then I have a Savage with the accuracy-stock in .223. Right out of the box I just worked up a load and it's a one hole group at 100 yards and sub-MOA at distances to 300 yards.

I was going to get a Savage in .308 Win. My boy called me this past week and said once he gets his signing bonus from the Army he's buying me a Ruger American .308 for my birthday. So that solves that.
