It is that time of the year to think about spring habitat work. I have my list of trees to be ordered form the Howard Nursery. This year I am going to plant in the food dept.....Flowering Dogwood, Washington Hawthorne, Northern Bayberry, American Crabapple. In the cover dept. I will get the chainsaw out and cut some more trees down and make my clearings a little bigger and trails wider to promote more edgey growth. I will also plant Norway Spruce and Eastern White Pine for cover. My food plot will be converted from Brassicas to clover and possibly a strip or 2 of dwarf sorghum. Last year there were just 4 of us doing all the planting and cutting, but the different people who have come up thru the year have all asked when we are going to do our habitat weekend. They all liked what we have done and thought it looked "neat" with all the birdhouses and stuff we have going on. I guess there is something to be said about getting your hands dirty and giving back. I think most of us would aggree that what we give back is very minimal to what Mother nature gives us in return. I cant wait until April rolls around and we can start giving back.
Anyone else have any plans??

What kind of bird houses did you build? Been wanting to build some and might be able to get my 3 year old to "help" build and put them up. Once grouse season is over I will get the chainsaw out and go to work making some cuts somewhere, not sure where yet though. I want to frost seed some additional clover on some new clover plots that I planted in the fall. Brassicas and rye will be planted come August with spraying before that several times. I have about a thousand other things in my head to do but probably won't get to them.

I make aluminum for a living and I am not very good at woodworking at all. I would rather work a day of overtime and buy them instead of struggling to make them ;D. I guess I have about 30 of them out right now. If you pick them up it is cheaper then paying for shipping, but the cost of fuel for me it is cheaper for them to ship. They also sell kits already pre-cut that you can put together yourself.

Man, I wish I had the time & resources to do some real food plots... down the road... Anyway, I've gotten several premade bluebird boxes from the Howard Nursery and they are nice, and outside of shipping, priced lower than anywhere else. I would continue to use Howard Nursery, but didn't I hear that it may get phased out? I hope not. Great place to get trees too, and my sister-in-law has done the PGC program about trees with her kids in class. I get the leftover trees. My yard backs up to some decent wetlands, so I have some nice "edge" behind me that I'm working to make habitat at least for wild birds. We have a friendly grouse, and during the last snow storm discovered there's a sharp-shinned hawk floating around. I think he likes my plentiful doves actually. I'm also along the way of a deer trail. This reminds me... I got my 1st "On-Target" magazine last week and have learned some good stuff. I'm about to get into the book that was mentioned: "Under Cover: Wildlife of Shrublands and Young Forest" You can get a free PDF here: youngforest.org/sites/default/files/Under_Cover-010412_FINAL.pdfOr order a hardcopy here: www.wildlifemanagementinstitute.org/store/product.php?productid=16209&cat=3&page=2

I cut all weekend. Alot of big ol' knarly maples that are useless to me. Really opened up the canopy. They will be replaced with my order from the PGC nursery. Got the deer bundle, white pines, and chesnuts. I still have a ton of chainsaw work to do.
I just wish my property was in a better location. It's close to town and surrounded by properties/neighbors that kill every deer they see basically. If my property bordered some lease property that practiced better management, I'd have a mecca for deer.
