Just picked up my sons late Christmas present. Dad aint made of money here LOL had to lay it away at the local gun shop. I bought him the Savage Axis in 30-06. For 319.00 with scope not a bad looking rifle. Not real keen on the plastic release on the clip and the trigger is a little heavier than what we are used to. He is going to get it out today and shoot it. Cant wait to see how it does. Read a lot of reviews and they all said they shoot well. So we will see how it goes this afternoon.

Very nice gift Dale plus a good all around caliber. I have a Savage 22mag plus owned others over the years & found them to be tack shooters!! If this for your Son Cory?

Hope you like it. I had one in .22-250 and hated it. The stock was way too flimsy at the grip and the trigger was nasty. The clip release seemed like it would break off in a season or two of use. I felt the Ruger American is twice the rifle for the same money. I see Remington has basically copied the Axis in it's 583. So they must see something in it. The other thing is the Axis starts rusting just by giving it a dirty look.

Yes Larry its for Cory. He wanted 1 so see how it works for him. Tried to steer him to another caliber LOL. ( Dad is partial to the .243 ). But he wanted an 06 . Headed out now to shoot it. Mike noticed the stock wasnt to thick at the grip but seems solid enough. Doesnt like he can always get another stock. As for the trigger think a good gunsmith can smooth it out for him.

Sorry took me so long to get back. It shot well after we got it sighted in. Going to look into doing the trigger work Skwirl showed in his post. The trigger is a little stiff. He found out that it raps just a little harder than the .243 he is used to lol but big as he is he can handle it.

I might actually get to use it now Brad LOL. He has had it since he started hunting and done well with it. I want to change the stock and upgrade to anew scope. The old Redfield is starting to fog up and not as clear as it was. I dont mind recoil but I figure why beat myself up when the .243 does everything I need it to.

I don't have the "must have the biggest magnum" disease, but I don't mind shooting them. My go to deer rifle is a Browning A-bolt hunter in .257 Roberts and it is all I need for whitetails. Unfortunately, or depending upon how you look at it, fortunately whitetails are not the only thing I hunt. If I go to Africa again for dangerous game or to Alaska for brown bear I would need something considerably bigger. I have just the ticket for those sorts of things, a Winchester model 70 Safari grade in .416 Remington Magnum. It is a real shoulder thumper and those of you who find the old ought six a bit too much in the recoil department would definitely not like to shoot that one for pleasure. Most of my larger game animals have been taken with my .300 Weatherby with the rest of them being put to rest with my Remington mountain rifle in .30-06. Now, to the sad,sad story. The gun safe is full of rifles that I just had to have at the time I bought them.

I like recoil and loud bangs.I'm not sure why,I just do.What I don't like is heavy guns.I have two Kimber Montanna's,one in .308 and one in 300 wsm.The .308 weighs just over 5lbs bare and it smacks you pretty hard for a short action. The 300 wsm weighs about 6lbs.I personally don't find it uncomfortable to shoot but everyone I've let shoot it claimed it was one of the most obnoxious rifles they've ever shot.

No, I never heard back from the dealer. He was out of them. Sorta wish I had one tho..... So you hunt with both the .243 and the .260? Great cartridges but I see alot of overlap there. More power to you. I've hunted all PA big game with the .243 (two seasons it was all I would carry) but never shot a darn thing bigger than a woodchuck with a .243 as it's the most unlucky cartridge I ever used. I may give it another chance someday but I have to buy one again first. I let two Savages get away from me and last year I purchased a delightful H&R single shot .243 which was accurate as all get out. I was excited to hunt with it and last spring somebody was talking on huntingpa about how they want to get there daughter busy practicing for deer season but they couldn't afford a gun. I contacted him and asked him what he could do and he said $150. Now I had $250 into the gun but I'm a bleeding heart so I let him have it for that. I hope the young girl got her deer last year. FWIW I'm darn lucky I didn't have a .243 to hunt with this past season as I didn't get a single big game animal. Now before 2012 that had only happened to me in '96 and '08 which were both years that I exclusively used the .243 Winchester. If i'd have gone back to the .243 just to have that happen again last year I'm sure I'd consider the cartridge hexed and never touch it again. ;D

LOl Mike I had an 06 before I bought my .243 almost 33 years ago. I didnt like the 06 hated the recoil. Bought a Rem. Model 700 ADL and havent looked back since. Its been good to me and Cory between the 2 of us its taken over 30 deer a couple of turkeys and untold number of groundhogs. I want to do a little to it this year new stock mine is cracked where I took a slide down the mountain at camp 1 year. Glued it back together and its held a long time . Just time for something new. I like the Boyds laminated stocks so thinking thats what I am going to go with. Also need a new scope the old Redfield wideview (tv screen model ) has seen its better days. Not as clear as it used to be and has fogged up on me twice now. So hopefully by deer season I will have this done.
