Does anyone have any tips for growing persimmon trees? I have tried growing them from seed none have made it to their second year. This year I bought 50 small bare root seedlings from Musser nursery and am going to plant them in groups of five to ten spread out over different parts of my property. Have any of you planted these and or do you have any tips that might make success more likely. I am very near the northern edge of what is supposed to be their coldest growing zone.

I never had much luck using tree tubes with them. I cage mine. They can be slow growing for the first few years. I'm sure you know that some will be male and some female trees. With 50 you won't have to worry about pollination.

The male/female thing is the reason for my planting them in groups. I do plan on tubing some of them just to see what may work here-and I have quite a few tubes anyway.
Is there any particular type soil that they do particularly poorly or very well in.

You are also on the northern range of persimmons, which is a negative.

I may have a slight stubborn streak, Dutch. This is at least the fourth year to attempt growing these, but all the other times have been from seed-(see how I can justify it with myself ) I'm also going to put a bunch of effort into pawpaws this year thanks to a generous donation of seeds from a member herethumbsup and some seeds from another friend who found a source for them.

I honestly believe we should plant what works successfully in an area.
Lots of time wasted, for the effort, in some cases.
If I could, I'd plant apples.

I have a couple of persimmon behind the house. I forgot to collect seeds this year as I was going to try to transplant a few as well.

Wildlife really don't need us to plant anything for them anyway at least in this part of the country. Sometimes it is fun to try and get something to work that isn't easy. For example, you could plant apples. I am guess that you say you can't because of bears? If so you could get a solar fence charger and put electric wire up to keep the bears off of the tree during that time of the year. Sometimes the expense isn't worth it, but it can be fun.

I have lots of apples, pears, red and white oaks, black cherry, some beech, a few black walnuts, and far to many wild grape.
I have planted lots of other stuff like; english walnut, leeks, ginseng, golden seal, firs, pines, spruces, lots of blue berries, and a few odd balls.
Since I was a kid I've read about how much nearly all game loves persimmons and I have to scratch the itch I have to try growing some-it's about the same with the pawpaws. -----Not crazy enough to try coconuts or pineapples, and I have been warned about bamboo. Projects like this keep me from being upto something no good, and except for my time and a little bit of money, my failures don't cost much and they answer my questions.

Persimmons are over rated in my observation. I have a Persimmon in my yard that is about 20 feet tall. Lots of deer. Seems the only deer that really like the Persimmons are the fawns. And even among the fawns not all go after them. And they are a pain when the fruit drops in late summer. Squishy all over the place! Fills my mower tires with seeds and sticky pulp. Well, if these persimmons don't work out this time, I'm moving onto growing my own mushrooms-oysters, portabella, and lions mane to start with......May change me from a stubborn guy to a fungi smileys-whistling-823718

I can tell just by reading some of your posts that the mushrooms ought to do very well for you
But good luck with the persimmons!
