I was reading my last edition of Handloader magazine, and they had an article in it about loading for the 300 Blackout AKA the 300 Whisper (same cartridge....different name) and were giving all of the reloading data for primarily bolt action rifles. They blathered about supersonic loads and then the "biggie" it was developed for, the subsonic load (less than the speed of sound) and as quiet as can be when shot using a suppressor. So, while reading this.....it dawned on me (yes.....I, on occasion do have these "dawning" moments.....they get less and less....but they happen) that while I had been looking at the load ranges of the .307, and comparing them to the 30-30......well....the 300 Blackout velocities were not much different on the high end than those of the 30-30. So....I thought, with the development of TrailBoss powder, the 30-30 HAS to have a good sub-sonic load with a 30 caliber bullet. So, I go to the Hodgdon web site.....and there it is. A 160gr. Cast bullet using 6gr. of TrailBoss from a 30-30 will get ya 997fps, and the same cast bullet with the max load will get ya 1,195fps. Now, I also know that a Google search will give you the formula for shooting copper bullets for TrailBoss, so finding the right TrailBoss load for shooting a subsonic round from a 30-30 should not be a real chore. So.....what's all the fuss about this 300 Blackout?

It runs and sounds like a sewing machine out of an AR-15 and with 220 grain bullet provides excellent lethality out to 200 yards. Even without a can it speaks softly and recoil is not much different from the 5.56. It's the ultimate cartridge for deer hunting suburban settings where you're riding the edge of a safety zone and you don't want to blow folks off their couch. And with a 125 grain bullet it outdoes the 7.62x39.

Its a secret Dave, but in all honesty to many idiots do not know that reduced loads are really, really dangerous. And no doubt you will hear about many a model 94 or 336 coming apart in some kids face because of "uncle Burt" cutting the powder charge in half so little Spencer won't be sckeeerd of shooting the big guns. Done proper, a guy could safely shoot with out offending neighbors and realistically kill game at reasonable distances, but like all thing there is the "Idiot factor" out there, and that has to be considered when publishing this sorta stuff. Sounds kinda sweet in a Thomson Center encore huh? A deer poachers dream!

I agree with you about reduced loads Jim. They've done in a lot of rifles. But the .300 AAC Blackout is not a reduced load. That 220 grain is loaded full tilt but is still subsonic.

My point being, some one will think putting 7 grs of unique in a 30-30 case will give you the same results, it might be sub sonic but the boom won't be.

True, but the point of the 300 blackout is to use subsonic loads with a suppressor. My point was instead of rebuilding the entire foundation.....just thread the end of the barrel and install the same suppressor, use the reduced TrailBoss load and you have the same load in the end. Heck....most people just need to dig in the back of their gun cabinet and they already have the rifle.

It was developed for the AR15. I have the ultimate urban rifle. Its a Remington Model 7 chambered in 7TCU. It s a 223 necked up to 7mm. developed for the bench rest group by Ulgade. It can propel a 140 gr bullet to 2400 FPS out of an 18 inch barrel. there are better rounds for urban deer. There is also the 6.5 TCU
