Hello all, just joined site and thinking of changing things up a bit with my out of state Grouse hunting this year. 30 year Grouse hunter in Ohio but have been forced to go out of state to persue ruff with the chocolate lab who has turned out to be wonderful. Years going to Upper Michigan where we do get into birds like we experienced a long ago in Ohio. A sad story for Ohio Ruff hunters. My brother, an attorney in Cleveland, has a cabin in Ellicottville, New York so he can do the ski thing which I pass on. He's always asking me to come up some weekend but my free time selfishly takes me to the woods. Question, I've done limited research to this point about Northwestern PA Grouse and it appears that there is some management done for the Grouse Hunter. Obviousely, without giving me GPS #'s, could someone point me in the right direction in reference to areas, counties or forest near Ellicottville in PA where one may be able to put up some birds. Thanks in advance for anyone that may reply. Joe in Columbus, Ohio

Between that and a "good morel spot", it may be tough sledding with responses.
I'll say this. Most of PA has suffered the same fate as apparently Ohio, regarding Grouse decline. There are definitely spots, mostly north of I-80, that hold fair numbers. Those areas are coveted for sure. But, you need to find the feed near the obvious grousey type cover, and you'll put some up. "Down here", they've all but disappeared. A few decades ago, we could have 2 dozen + flush days in Greene County........ sadly, no mo.

Joe, I hunt in NC PA, Potter County. 4-5 years ago, I'd flush 10-15 at a time on my lease.
This year, have not seen a grouse.
Hoping it's just the natural cycle, but.....

Howdy and welcome to the forum, Joe.
There are a few good areas for grouse in SC PA as well. The state game lands that have been cut over the last few years are a good place to start. I don't hunt them, but always managed to flush a couple while turkey or deer hunting. With grouse being of a cyclical nature, I don't know where we are in that cycle.

The down cycle, then from here its to under down. Then it just goes..
We to used to hunt the U.P. and after a couple run ins with wolves and the idiot wolve lovers we've never been back. The wolf has been the antihunter most successful tool.
