So, this year, we decided to dedicate our one acre plot to all soybeans, with some sunflowers thrown in. Deer love sunflowers, and soybeans, that's for sure. Both high in protein. So, my local Agway got me 2 bags of forage soybeans. Thought they were getting regular soys, but these are supposed to have a great deal of top growth, and not so much beans. We decided to plant half the plot with the forage soys, and the other half with regular soys. The idea is that in August, we will maybe be able to sow some brassics into the regular soys, IF the deer keep them trimmed back. So, here is a pic of our seed. We had disced the plot the end of April, and then on Saturday, we sprayed it with Glyphosate. Spread some fertilizer, and the seed. This is pre spraying. This is after the seed and fertilizer was disced in. We hope the remaining vegetation will die off, and with the rain last night and today, I think we will get some great germination. Will keep it updated for the rest of the summer.

I didn't take the pic. Wasn't there. I have 2 cages up to monitor browsing. Not many deer in the area right now as that plot has had nothing in it since December. Might change once they find the beans.

Only a cut in doe tags will bring up the deer herd.
That was done and they now shortened the season. Might help.

As you can see, the deer love the soys. Not a plant unbrowsed. Only half the plot came up well tho.

The exclusion cage shows the usage.

Current pic. The soys in the lower half are about knee height at places. I fertilized two weeks ago, and for some reason, the deer seem to be laying off them. I threw brassica on the entire plot today.

Here is the only sunflower that will grow to maturity in the plot. Deer love sunflower plants.

That sunflower plant looks a little bit lonely. LOL.

Just checked the beans today. Beans in the cage are about mid thigh on me. Outside, maybe 2 ft high.

I'm sure the recent rain has helped them. It has been pretty dry lately.

Beans are forming. I also overseeded the soys with brassica, and they are sprouting. Hoping the browsing will thin out the soys enough to allow more light in.

Here is a pic from today of my brassica plot. A month ago, the upper half was pretty much bare dirt. I hit it with urea and it got some rain. Not my best brassica plot, but considering I did no soil prep, other than spraying the weeds with Roundup, not bad. Pic from the opposite end of the field.
