So how many of you guys make your own? I made my first patch ever today. I planted 6 little tubers last spring and man did I dig a lot of root today. I ended up with 10 pints of the hottest dang root I've ever had! I should have worn a gas mask while processing it, the stuff will take your breath away! I replanted 8 tops right after picking, should be back in business next Easter!

Where did you get the roots to start them?? I can remember as a kid my greatgrandmother in tarrytown Ny going to the garden and getting the horseradish fresh and mixing with sour cream for potatoes. Thanks

I never made any, but I remember my grandmother used to make it. It was definitely some potent stuff. LOL. Fresh horseradish is hard to beat on some fried ham.

One of the members at my club game me the tubers last spring. He told me to plant it far away from my garden, as it is very invasive. It gets very large green leaves on it and little white flowers. I'm going to freeze most of this batch as it only last 3 to 4 weeks refrigerated.

IRRC my grandmother used to plant it down next to little creek where it stayed damp all the time. Not sure if it has to be but that is where she always planted it.

My grandfather used to grind his own.
You have to replant it each year?

My mother made condiment of beets and horseradish. I love the stuff and now my wife makes it for me. It's great on ham but I sometimes eat it with a spoon. It will clear your head really fast and make your eye lids sweat.

My grandfather used to grind his own. You have to replant it each year? You really don't have to replant, but my patch has only been in one season. An established patch will grow like wildfire on it's own. I'll get more root next season if I replant the tops. They will re root. Loggy, that looks like some good stuff!

Once you plant it, it's hard to get rid of it. It doesn't seem to spread too much but, if you leave a small part in the ground, it will grow back.

Guy that used to run our club's block shoot kitchen, made his own. Didn't really need to eat any, just remove the lid and look at it for a coupla seconds - instant sinus relief.
Every year I do 8 to 10 lbs of steamed shrimp on Christmas Eve. One dish of sauce is just plain cocktail sauce. The other has a glob of horse radish mixed in and I never tell anyone which is which. Don't take 'em long to find out.
The kids have wised up - they sniff to see which one makes yer eyes water.

Once had a burger, beef on wick, at a place in Coudersport. Didn't know, at the time, what beef on wick was. I do now.
Had the strongest horseradish on it. My nose was running, tears coming out my eyes, and the top of my head felt like it was on fire.
Never again.....

Loggy, only been to that market a couple times in my life. Seems like elbow to elbow whenever I've been there.
May not be as classy, but Roots Country Market is my style. LOL

Bought a couple horse radish roots from an amish woman outside of holtwood. She dug them while I waited. At home I scrubbed the dirt off and then peeled the root. Cut it into chunks and into the blender with some white vinegar. When I tasted a small spoon full, I thought my nostrils exploded. My temples were covered with sweat and it felt like the top of my head was gonna pop. Took a few minutes for my blood pressure to recede. So I got a piece of ring bologna and loaded it up. Darn that was good.
