What is the best all around cartridge/rifle combo for PA big game hunting? I still think it is a Remington 760 in .30-06. What say you?

Remington 700 .270
In fairness I haven't used many others but the 700 for big game so not much experience. Never liked the feel of the pump rifles though.

Had one for a few years in the 80s. When the 7600 came out, Kmart had a mess of 760s in 30-06 "on sale", so I figured to give one a try at that price? IIRC it cost around $225? The rifle shot very well with my 150gr Speer loads and I eventually scoped it. I killed three or four bucks with that thing and a doe or two, while I had it. That was around the time I started buying doe tags and many of the farmers around camp used 760s. Doe seasons sounded like a war zone back then. Used to pick on them for all that rapid fire blasting in doe seasons, then one year I fell into it myself. So the 760 went off to a buddy that had coveted it.

I'm no expert, but I'm pleased with the 30-30 I use (a 25 year old Marlin 336). The dirty-dirty HAS to be up on the list for sure for PA. I will say, mine likes 150gr CoreLokts & PPUs, and not 170gr cartridges. Off-hand, I had 2 of 3 touching a few weeks ago, and with the 170gr, it's more of a spray than anything else.

I don't care for the pumps. Always viewed those that used them as "lead throwers", Thats just me. I was once shot at by a "lead thrower" with a 760, and I didn't hunt for 2 years after that. My experience and it effected me.
I would say a 30-06 is darned hard to beat. Wish I still had mine, just in case I would hunt for bears, but then, my brother has tons of guns I can borrow.
I do like my 260 for deer. A bit more than a 243, but none of the unpleasantness of the '06.
If I had the time, I'd probably find a bear bullet for it, but, like I said, I can always borrow a gun if I want to kill a bear.

As far as rifle, man, the older models of the Ruger Ultra Lite, with the tang safety, is SWEET.
If I could find one, reasonable, I'd buy it. Went to an auction the other year and one went for $850 with a crappy scope on it!

I quit using pumps some years back. I use bolt guns in .30-06 now. I still think the pump has the advantage when driving though.

I love my Rmington 7mm 08 pump, but I'm not good at pumping and keeping the scope on the target, so I make sure the first shot is the only one I need.

I happened to be in the middle of a drive. I got out on a trail to be visible, and there was a stander 75 yds away. I stoof there, in plenty of orange and watched as a spike ran between he and I. I never raided my gun, yet he brought his up and started firing! I hit the deck. Never so scared in my life. The need to kill a buck, outweighed all commonsense to that guy. I gave him a tongue lashing.

My favorite deer rifle is my Browning A-bolt hunter in .257 Roberts. It is a deer killing machine. While I have a whole bunch of rifles ranging from .243 Winchester upt to .416 Remington Magnum, I keep going back to the .257. I don't take shots at running deer, and wait for an opening where the bullet doesn't have to pass through ten yards of mountain laurel, so the old "brush busting" stuff doesn't apply. A 117 grain Sierra Game King boattail bullet with 48 grains of MRP powder pushing it seems to be what the rifle likes. If we are including black bear in the question, my choice if I could only own one rifle would be a bolt action in .30-06. I dislike pumps except for shotguns. They are fine guns, but not for me.

One bullet hit the tree I was leaning up against and another one hit a metal electric tower in the middle of a field that I was walking behind. I also had a bullet smack a rock close to me in SGL 211 a few years ago. None of it has been as frightening though as the first day of Pheasant season on SGL 145 (Colebrook). I left early on Saturday because I felt that the boy and mine's life were in danger. Same thing every year I don't know why I keep going back for the first day.

For PA Deer & Bear im sort nestled in with a 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser round. First carried last year & it did everything i xpected it to on a deer. Don't think a Blackie would offer much refusal to a 156 grain Norma Oryx if such opportunity arises.
