Last weekend I started a new brassica plot. Needed some lime, so, got 1800 pounds and shoveled it on by hand, 1 hour for a half acre. Had sprayed it heavy with Roundup a few days before. And this young man enjoyed discing it up for us. And this is how it looked when we were done. Not much to look at, right? One week later, this is how it looks And this is what's coming up Hopefully, in 6 weeks or so, this will be almost up to my knees. LOTS of food for the deer when the woods food dies off. They will enjoy this come November. I added Groundhog Radishes to this mix, even tho it had a forage radish in it. The GH Radish sends a thick taproot into the soil to naturally loosen the soil. Here is one from last year

Not doing as well as past years. I think it's not getting quite the sun in this location as it did in the upper part of the plot. I also don't think I got enough urea on? This is 5 weeks after planting. Will say that usually after 6-7 weeks it's knee high or better. Will broadcast more urea on it this coming weekend.

Mine isn't doing as well this year either, but I think I got it a little too thick. Looks like yours may be a bit thick as well?

Mine is always thick like that, and they do well, when I pour the urea on. Maybe I just didn't get enough.
I also know brassica doesn't like it real wet or damp. This is the wet part of the plot.
Still think its mostly the urea. Will correct that this weekend.

Mine didn't grow as well this year either. Tons of weeds in some fields too. I blame too much rain and the fact that we disked/fertilized a week prior to planting on some of the fields. That gave the weeds a weeks head start on the brassicas. Live and learn I guess.

Yes, will put it down. Will put it down in the afternoon when the leaves are dry. Hope for rain later. 200 miles away, ya gotta do what you can, when you can.

Here is how it looks now, 3 weeks after adding 50 lbs of urea to the 4/10 acre plot. Up to his knees. You can see where my buddy didn't get the urea on. The area in front is still stunted and yellow

Looks great Dutch! The deer have been hammering my turnip patch, they are already digging and eating the root. They didn't start doing this until December last year. I'm thinking the local deer have acquired a taste for my purple tops, or they know we're in store for a bad winter!

They used to say they had to develop a taste for them. Never saw it.
Had a buddy plant them in Lebanon County years ago, 2 years in a row, and they were barely ever touched. He didn't have a lot of deer and there were other foods available.
