Got the turnip patch plowed yesterday, just barely beat the rain. Will disc and seed next Saturday. Purple top and ladino clover.

You mixing the 2?
Gotta be careful you don't get the turnips to thick or they will shade out the clover.

Always mix the 2 it works great. The clover is for next spring. The deer will eat the turnips into Feb. and any clover that comes up this fall. In the spring the plot will green up fast, thick with clover. It worked like a charm last year. This plot will be re-planted every Aug. with the same mix. My other plots are good for the next 3 years or so, they are all whitetail clover that was planted with the turnip mix last Aug.

Looks good C-spot! Hope they come in nice! I had great results last year with the turnips, they where the size of soccer balls. I bought the seed at a local garden center. I'll be planting 5 lbs of turnip seed in this plot.

Where are you buying them local? I bought this stuff from Gander or Walmart, but I know I am probably overpaying.
The last couple of years I have planted Biologic Outfitters blend which has brassicas and some other stuff in it. It did great the first year, but I wasn't as happy with it last year. I think part of the problem was I may have gotten it seeded to heavy. I think the turkeys and crows may help that this year.
THe rain we got yesterday and today was about perfect for these plots to take off. We couldn't have timed it any better.

Ianetti's Garden Center in Paris, Washington County. You could probably find them at an old school Agway as well.

The rain messed me up on Saturday. I still have a little dog leg down a powerline on the backside of this plot to plow. I'm going to try on Tuesday evening if the soil conditions are okay. Plan on discing this weekend and seeding.

I didn't know that Ianetti's carried them. That is only a few miles away from me. Will have to remember that for next year. Here is the outfitters blend from last year.

How many pounds of brassica did you put down, looks pretty thick? If I get then that thick they don't grow well but I don't have good ground.

Those plots look great, Cspot. I seeded my 1/2 acre plot last Sunday. I put down 6 lbs. Ladino clover, 6 lbs. Red clover, and 8 oz. of Purple Top Turnip. I rolled it in after seeding. This plot should be thick with turnip and clover. Last season I only used 4 oz. of turnip seed on 1 acre of plot and they where thick with giant turnip.

Bake, I probably got it a little too heavy from the looks of it. I thought I did a pretty good job until it came up. LOL. The mix stuff I got said to use 10lb for 2 acres so I only tried to use about 2 lb since this portion of the plot is just shy of a 1/4 acre. The pea/oat mix looks like I did a better job of keeping it not so thick.
Thanks Bush. I am hoping to put in 3 more plots once they finish the gasline that they are running thru the property. They are starting to put the topsoil back over the line now. I would guess that they should be done no latter than the end of the month. I am going to overseed some of the same mixes above. Not going to worry about putting anything permanent as another gasline is coming thru in January, so then I will determine where I want to put some permanent plots.

I usually seed at about 6# per acre, anything more and I don't get good results. It seems commercial mixes always recommend a higher rate, not sure why. Higher might work for you though, everywhere is different. I'm sure your deer won't care!
Thanks for sharing the pics. I've barely had time to plant anything this year let alone take pics and post them. It's been a good growing season from what I've seen.

Would it be too late to plant turnips or radish next week in NC? Not at all. I think even in PA it says up until Mid-September is ok for planting.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks Mid september is to late for upstate, generally. Put 100-150 lbs of urea per acre on them to give them a boost. Half at planting and half broadcast a bit later. I planted mine a week ago and they are popping out of the ground now. Usually best to give them 60 days before a killing frost.
