Each year for the past three we have hosted a reward hunt for some of the students of the Wildlife Leadership Academy. These kids go thru intensive camps during the summer. Bucktails, for deer, Brookies, for trout, and Drummer camp for grouse. These kids immerse themselves in the study of these species. They get up at 6AM and go to bed at midnight. Once done with the camp, they go back to their communities and do outreach to various orgs preaching the importance of the wildlife conservation. These kids are A+ and will go on to become leaders in conservation.
Anyway, the hunt consists of a morning of hunting chukars with our "professional" dog handlers their wonderful bird dogs. This year, some of the "younger" crew of club members helped, passing the torch gievn them by the older guys.
The kids came from Westmoreland, Union, Mifflin, Monroe, and York Counties. Five of them showed up Sunday morning for the hunt.
After a bit of a safety talk, some claybird shooting, and a minor glitch waiting for release forms, the kids proceeded into our fields to watch the dogs work their magic! The 2 men I had in my group had never hunted with a dog, but were REAL good shots. I worked with JohnS's brother Jeff and his dog Bailey. The other 3 kids worked with some Englis Setters, compliments of Dave Gehman, Jarrod Specht, and Ryan Frame.
Puppy pics are compliments of a new litter from jarrod Specht. Be prepared for the "awwwwwwww" effect. LOL
Here are some pics from the hunt:
Bailey
Bailey, JeffS, Glenn, and Tyler heading out
Tyler preparing to get on a flushing bird
Glenn getting on a chukar
Getting in on Bailey's point
The 5 kids, "guides" and their kill.
Gal grilling the chicken for lunch. YUM! Fiesta Lime Chicken!
And now...... the future hunters, and the "awwwwwwww" effect.
Our thanks to Michelle Kittel and all the incredible work she puts into Wildlife Leadership Academy.
And also our thanks to the Lancaster Red Rose Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for their facilities.
