Sat. was a long day in stand with rain in the morning and clearing by lunch but we where in stand by 630 am. We seen nothing all day but 1 porcipine, about 10 tree rats and some chipmunks but I just told him Hunter its a matter of time! Well at noon he ate a sandwich and decided to take alittle nap so I was on look out. He napped for about and hou and a half and woke all refreshed for the evening. I was proud of him the way he stuck it out because sitting all day in stand is tuff even for me sometimes and then not seeing much was tuffer yet. At 530 I heard something down infront it the thick stuff that sounded like something walking, I told Hunter ok I believe we got one comming so with eyes peeled in front her she comes and he was pumped! LOL she came into 15 yards and he was ready and I made the bap sound and she stopped dead and I said Let her have it. He made a perfect shot and with hugs and high fives the rest is history! Just a feeling I never experienced before! We packed up our stuff and took it to the truck and went to retreive her. We found blood at the impacked sight and started trailing her but to my amazement there was not much blood! We got about 75 yards and still no deer. I said Hunter this is strange to me because she should not have gone this far. The ground was damp and wet and with the spotty blood I didnt want to step somewhere and loss the blood so I decided to pull out and come back in the day light. Sunday morning we went back and started where we left off and still just finding drops here and there and I was stumped. I shot many deer already with a bow and I never had a deer with a lung shot just trickle blood and go this far. Well finnally we founded her laying dead and as I aproached you could see a perfect X behind the shoulder and to my suprise when I fliped her over the exit hole had part of the liver sticking out which cloged the hole and that is why we didnt have much blood. I guess first time for everything but to say the least he did great with and awsome shot and even got a good tracking experience!

Nice job!
Hunter learned great lessons.
First; its called "hunting" and not "getting" for a reason. Second; patience really is a virtue, and sometimes, the rewards are great.
I've gone a few days not seeing deer for one reason or another in the same spot/area. Then suddenly; they are there again.
Last, but certainly not least; he learned to never give up!
How old is Hunter; Bearslayer?? (I almost called ya BSer -short for bearslayer, lol)

I have been taking him out hunting since he was 7 with the mentor program and he did get his first gobler when he was 7. He will be 12 Dec. 10th and then the flintlocks will be out. That is his favorite thing to shoot and he shoots it very well. Thanks all for the kind words!

Thanks for posting bearslayer and congrats to Hunter. My dad told me that I would probably kill a lot of deer in my lifetime but I'll never forget the first one. I doubt if he ever forgets his.

YA'll:) A good many of you were on the front lines when we hammered away at the Mentored Youth opportunities in our state for the first time. Hard to imagine, at the time there were actually some opposed to the idea?? It was the single greatest thing we could have done to ensure another generation..or two might follow us:) If those of us who are grandparents, parents, and just all round decent sportsmen and sportswomen...can just steel ourselves to see Sunday HUnting gets a leg up in PA...We'll have a whopping good chance at grabbing another generation or two before we're done:) I cannot get enough of photos and stories of young people getting any glimpse of some of incredible experiences I have enjoyed in Penn's Woods..... The challenge for us 'moving right along the trail' crowd..is to keep it all in real time for them, and find inventive ways to make every outing spectacular in a simple way for them. They easily learn to love what we love...let's make very sure it is simply the time together...and not..the 'kill'. Besides, if we teach 'em right...the 'kills' will come..and then they will really mean something. Just like it did for all of us:) Find an easy reason to take a kid...any kid..."hunting' or 'fishing'/ We ALL win:)

Is this the first year for the MY antlerless tag transfer ? or second ? I never did understand why MY was initially set up that the youngsters had to pass on antlerless in the MY hunt, when part of the science behind HR was taking out females prior to breeding. Glad to see they can xfer tags..... looks like a happy camper.

Great deer congrats. Know that feeling you experienced. Had it twice with my boys. Cant beat it. Guess since 1 of mine doersnt hunt anymore and the other is 17 wants to hunt by himself I need to find a youth to mentor and take out. Miss the looks on their faces.
