I dropped my longbow off with Mike Shaw of Shaw's Traditional Archery, to have rattlesnake skins put on my bow. It should be ready in about two weeks. I'll be hunting with one of my recurves for the next couple of weeks.

Looks very nice! But I wouldn't want it because I just do not care for snakes and having my hand wrapped around the skin just isn't for me.

Bob, what is the process to apply a skin to a bow? How does the skin not crack due to the bow flexing?

Here's what I know and I'm sure that there is more to it.
Clean the back of the bow off using alcohol or maybe acetone. Lightly sand the back and wipe off with alcohol or acetone again. Apply the adhesive, in this case Mike used Titebond III? Put the skin on and trim it. you must be extremely careful not to rip the skin. After the adhesive has completely cured, you them have to remove the scales from the skin. Then you put on a coat of clear coat. When completely dry you wet sand it using 2000 grit sand paper. Repeat the clear coating and wet sanding process as many times as necessary. The above picture has 8 coats of clear coat and I believe the finished product will have somewhere between 14 to 18 coats.
Mike said that because my bow was black it made the diamondback colors reall "Pop.". I can't wait to pick it up this Saturday and use it on the 3D course Sunday.

I picked up the bow today and boy is he beautiful! Mike Shaw did an amazing job for me and I'll post some pictures over the weekend. I spent about 2 hours getting reacquainted her and she was hitting the spots as if were never apart. Tomorrow morning we'll be hunting together.
