I was out and about the last two days and have noticed that some trees have a lot of dead leaves on them. It being August I am wondering why this is, anyone have a clue?

Every year there are maples that have their leaves turn and drop in August. Nothing spectacular to look at but it happens. That might be one explanation.

Stroupy, it might be due to the cicadas this year. Last time I came down 81 from 901, there were quite a few oaks with dead tips due to cicadas. I think it's due to them laying eggs in the tips of branches or something like that.

I've seen it too (oak) in Michaux at our cabin. Was wondering the same thing...why? I think you hit the nail on the head Dutch...cicadas laying eggs sounds right.

Some sumac and some red maples are early with change. We have several red maples that are showing one single branch where most of the leaves are red already. Sumacs, especially along road are turning yellow.

My guess is the cicadas. Saw it years ago when we had them. It doesn't hurt the tree, from what I understand.
