Okay, so I'm switching powders for my Marlin 30-30 Win. I'll be using IMR 3031 powder with a Sierra 150 gr. FN and an R-P 9 1/2 primer out of Win brass. I'm seeing a wide variation of Max loads with IMR 3031 and 150's. I'm planning on loading up 31.0 gr.s of IMR 3031 w/150 gr. Sierras....For those of you who use this powder in your 30-30 what's your load? Thanks.

I load 30.5 Gr's of 3031 behind a 135 gr spritzer bullet in my contender, incredibly accurate with a 14 inch barrel, with little felt recoil.

I mostly load 125gr. hollow points but just loaded some 170's at 26.0 grs, 3031. I'm shootin in a contest off hand at 100yds. so this load is just for the shoot. I like the 125's the most from my 30.30 and I load them alittle warm nothing nicer then the flat nosed hollow point bullet in a 30.30

You shoot'n those 125 gr. Hpt's at deer bg? Are they Sierras? Years ago a guy from the Sierra Tech Line told me the Sierra 125gr. Hpt. was "the" deer bullet. I didn't buy it then but maybe he knew what he was talking about.

30-30 will be my next die purchase, since I acquired a 50s vintage M94 variant (M64) last year. This one has a 24" barrel and Lyman #66 peep sight.
Have loaded for the M94 in 32 Special for many years, though. Use IMR 4064 for the simple reason it's the powder I use the most of and always have plenty on hand. 33grs under a Hornady flat point is very accurate, although it was the max load in most manuals 30 years ago. No pressure/extraction issues to date. For the most part 30-30 and 32 Spl. cases aren't all that hardy, but it's not a rifle that gets shot alot.
We have several guys at our club that shoot "lever gun" matches with M94s and M336s in 30-30. All rifles are equipped with peep sights (mostly Lymans) and all shoot cast lead bullets w/gas checks.

denny when I was a boy and hunted with my dad lots of guys hunted with 94's, 336, sav.99's and some shotguns. It was iron sites deer drives and cold feet LOL. I've had a 30.30 most of my life. My 94 =was my turkey shoot rifle. I'ed load it light and put kpock on top of the little charge of powder as to keep it close to primer. Back then in 60's live turkey shoots were at many gun clubs and we prided ourselves in doing well and even asked to stop shootin. Back as a young guy I was much better at off hand and the buck horn sites on my 30.30 94 are a work of art. My 94 has the half moon butt and an oct. barrel. My 336 has a 1X4 Luey on it with low mounts and heavy X-hairs and this is the rifle I shoot now and the 94 is a safe queen. 30.30's are a fun gun and the case has taken a few turns =even done up in an ackly. I have a few rifles at prices I wish were less and like them all but the 30.30;s are just sweet and I'll always have at least one LOL. I'm a die hard 3031 for my 30.30's but I too use a lot of 4064. I'll give you a short run down. .222-H335, .220-H380, 4064, 6.5 Creedmoor H4350, 4064, .270 4350 These are the rounds I load all the time and shoot the most. I do have an old box of speer 100gr. plinker half jacket that I get the notion to load but I don't just can't seem to waste them don't know if they are even made today Hopefully you keep shootin those lever actions like me they are fun to play with and hunt deer with

My M94 in 32 Spl. is a saddle ring carbine made in the mid 1920s and has the crescent steel butt plate. I also have a 1903 vintage M92 in 38-40 (24" round barrel). A 1951 vintage M336 sporting carbine in 35 Rem w/half magazine tube is another favorite. Williams peep on that little critter and it's dropped a few deer.
Before I got the M64 Winchester 30-30, those were my primary doe rifles. Killed my first buck with the 32 Spl. Had it since 1964.
Love old rifles in general and old lever guns in particular.
4064 is my 22-250, 8x57, 32 Spl and "this'n that" powder. Probably have at least 10 different powders out in the babinet at any given time? Other than 2400 for Hornet and pistol loads, most of my powders were IMR rifle powders going back to the late 70s.
But I've "modernized" a bit in the past few years with some other choices. smileys-whistling-823718
Ain't nothing but 4064 going into the above choices, nor anything but IMR 4831 in my 25-06s. It ain't broke, I don't try to fix it.

denny, nice rifles you have a nice collection goin on and good that you shoot them. When I had my 25.06 I used 4831 also. Not surprised that we use same stuff for it is a proven powder in many cartridges. I read so much on the new and improved powders like H380, 322, and335 and as my daughter told me live in the times dad don't fall behind??? The H-380 is very, very good in a swift but if I shoot 4064 you can't pick the group from one another. With the 125gr.Sierra HP I load 31.0grs. 3031 with nice groups could step it up a bit more but they group so nice I hate to mess around. As I said I'm shooting in an Olympic shoot at club all proceeds to cancer. It's all off hand shooting. 10 shots@50yds.RF rifle, 10 @ 100yds. CF, 10 pistol@ 25yds. 10 trap, 5 archery, and 5@50yds. black powder. I'll have a time of it with the youngins but it'll be fun!!! The 170's I loaded @26.0 grs. 3031 shot bad to slow guess I'll waste the 125's at the shoot LOL With the off hand shootin @ 100 I kept the scope power at 2X and went for it. Didn't see all the movement so that's what I'll do I guess. Shot the 22mag. at 50 on 4X lowest power and did ok. The pistol I'm shootin is a Ruger Single six, with a 2X Burris made in USA 22RF and did ok also. I'm shootin a friends Bl.powder rifle and I'll use pot luck LOL. My Parker Tornado will be help, and trap should be fine I shoot once a week and my 391 dose it's part so I'll pick up alittle score there LOL......Maub look again at loads for I'm shootin 31.o with 125's. I don't have books next to me but seems you could go up some. As you might know new loadin books are written by lawyers so loads are safe for everyone. If you have an old book like from 60,70's check them out. Load 5 rounds of different loads and see where it leads you as we all know the rifle will tell you what it likes. Most 30.30's are 1-12 twist so a faster load will get the spin goin better. denny, you said your levers are doe guns, I see a 94 etc. and I vision a spike buck on the ground LOL. You and I both know back when it was spikes most times, and AR has made bucks betterIMO as my daughter quote's get with the times and the times are Antler restrictions work for young or old even if we use old rifles, LOL

Up until the early 80s, all of my bucks were taken with an open sighted rifle. Killed my first buck with the M760 ought six when it still had the issue sights, scoped it later. Never bought a doe tag until 1986. Personal decision on using antiques w/irons for baldies most of the time these days. If I still had my buck tag while toting one and a buck shows up, no problem there either. When we were younger, watched my cousin thump quite a few bucks with his grandpap's old M94 in 30-30. Some at pretty good distances. He still hunts with an iron sighted Savage in 30-06, has killed a fair number of deer out to 200 yards with it. Having lived his entire life on farms in NY and PA, he's killed more deer than any two people I know, put together. Neither of us got around to killing a deer last year, so his son has decided that we're both "washed up" now. We'll show him what's up, next season. Perhaps with them old 30-30s?

Denny, I just happen to have a set of Lyman dies for .30-30, and I also have some of the old Winchester Silvertip bullets in 150 and 170 grain. Interested?
