One of the members of our sportsman's club works for Cover Crop Solutions. He was telling me of the benefits of tillage radishes. They will be bringing out a mix for deer that includes a tillage radish. I've seen more and more farmers here putting them in as a winter cover crop. They have a taproot that drills deep into the soil, breaking up hard soils and bringing minerals to the surface. When these radishes get a hard freeze, they die. The leaves literally cover and smother the soil. In the spring, the smothering effect keeps weeds from coming up. For food plotters, many of us without a means to till deeply, these radishes could be an answer to a problem with soil compaction. I have used Groundhog Radishes, but not extensively enough to say how well they work. I know others have used them with good success. Seems to me that if farmers are beginning to use them more extensively, they may have a usage for us. Just something to keep an eye on. www.covercropsolutions.com/products/tillage-radish.phpwww.ampacseed.com/groundhog.htm
