It's always tough with "sneaky quiet gobblers". Ya dare not move the whole time you're on stand!!

What about every other spring? It's more common then it isn't anymore.

Could it be that some gobblers are just more vocal than others? Vocal birds announcing their location leads to hunters moving to hunt them leading to a great take of vocal birds, leaving the more silent birds to pass their genes along to the next generation. Just a thought.

What the heck did the State Turkey Biologist mean with her final comment: “ Yes “I’m one of those believers in not doing any yelping preseason,” she said about possibly educating the birds.” She better have a talk with Doug here! LOL

Maybe she should have a talk with Denny Gulvas because he's the one who originally convinced me that it's true. There's not a single person in this country who hs spent more time studying, filing and calling in birds than him.I'll take his experience of Maty Joe's any day of the week.
For decades people blamed tight lipped birds on pressure but if you really observe, study them and be objective,it's obvious that the breeding cycle and make up of the flock that drives everything.

My son is a Turkey Hunter, I'm not. But I've been around them my entire life, and understand how they operate for the most part. I'm in the April woods even more than most Turkey Hunters, since I hunt Morels religiously. That said, here in SW PA, most hens are bred, and are sitting on eggs right now. I've come across 3 nests just on my farm. The Gobblers were sounding off wayyyyyyy more a couple weeks ago or more, than they are right now. I'm still hearing a few gobbles, but nothing like earlier.

Spring is coming earlier and earlier and our season has become a summer turkey season. One of the latest in the country. Even Ontario is open right now.

Agree. The Morels (the later Yellows), popped up weeks ago. They are about done here in Wash. Co. That season gets earlier and earlier, and it's all climate dependent. First week of May is when you could normally count on finding big Yellows down here. Not any longer.
My Daffodils are out of the ground by 3rd week of February. My Garlic and Ramps start out of the ground soon after. Times they are a changin'

A guy from a camp at the end of the lane stopped to check my progress on the cabin this morning. He said he and a friend heard several gobblers Wednesday and Thursday in the mornings and Weds. evening, but they couldn't find any last evening. Sometimes they just shut up?
