The Lyman All American Scope(link below) was the very first transition from open sights to scope that my camp made in late 50's/mid 60's now almost 70 years ago!! I had a Lyman All American 4X on an ole 35 REM 141 pump my Granpap gave me in back in 1965. The transition was almost "magical" except during wet weather conditions.....talk about bitchin on fogged scopes causing missing that buck!! Oh how things have progressed to what we enjoy today!! Any old scope stories to share?? Lyman All American

Always used Leupolds, never had any scope issues. LOL
My dad's gun had a 3-9 VariX 2 on it. All of us brothers of course bought those as well.
2009 I was at some swanky SHOT Show function in Florida and I was sitting by on older gentlemen. It turned out he was one of those at Leupold that developed the VariX 2. It was just kinda cool. Something of a legend, at least in my mind

Years ago, I bought a used VX2, and maybe 5 years ago the crosshairs broke. I sent it back hoping they could fix and recondition it. They sent me a brand new Freedom scope!

Memory fades as one gets old but I believe it was 1964. It rained cats and dogs the first day of buck season. I had a Remington model 760 with a Weaver 4x scope at that time. It fogged. As I later found out, Weaver scopes had a huge problem that day, and it took the company several years (decades) to overcome it. Personally I never bought another Weaver.

One time I bought a Savage 308 and it came with a 2.5x Weaver steel tube. It seemed nice enough and held zero fine. Anyway I was out hunting in a light rain. I went for a walk to check the cut corn fields. I saw four deer in the one field 200 yards out. I lifted my rifle and the scope was hopelessly fogged. All I could do was turn around and walk away

The used scope I bought, after a serial number search, was made in the early 60s.

I remember one year we had wet conditions opening day and next day the temps plumetted. We had several of our Lyman All American scopes frost up on inside...pretty much useless. Had no fog prior day but moisture was getting in some scopes. A few guys went to the raised "see through" type mounts to still have open sights available. Didn't like...they wern't for me. I went back to just open sights for a few years. If I remember I then went to a TASCO World Class which was a decent Jap made introduction for TASCO. Never had any issues with it. TASCO evenually went to Taiwan/Chinese sourcing with lessor quality.

I will say I've hunted more with open sights than I ever have with a scope. Even to this day. Too many times I've fallen in the Woods and had to shoot my rifle to see that it was still on. Sometimes it wasn't. Because of that I probably go open sights only 2/3 of the time

I will say this, I've never had a scope be off from one year to the next, no matter how many falls I took. Again, always used Leupolds, not sure what the Vortex will be like.

I love my old Redfield with the TV screen. I had a 2-7x on my 30-06. Got about 15 years out of it before it fogged up on me. Always thought that lense shape was a neat idea.

I've had two or three Redfield Widefields. They were fine but too heavy

Never owned a Redfield. Always heard they were decent scopes. Last I heard in 2021 Leupold sold their Redfield operation to Academy Sports. Haven't seen any Redfields for sale anywhere? Lil Redfield History(and they do have an interesting history!!): Redfield History
