Well, I was still hunting this morning, had 9 come down past me, three were at 15 FEET! Anyway, I found a spot I could look down the mountain, as it had snowed. This was an old timber cut from the early 90s, and I could watch three skidder trails below me. In a bit, a spiker walked up the skidder trail. Twenty minutes later a deer came down the skidder trail. I thought it was the spiker coming back, but this one was larger and darker. It was 100 yds below me, I stopped it, then shot it. Long story short, it ran to about 150 yds and bedded. I went down and finished it off. A great day, a great week.

Thank you all. It's been a great fall. Tomorrow and Friday I'm hunting with my nephews wife while she tries to connect on a doe. My nephew and his wife have not gotten to hunt this year due to mentoring their daughters, so, I'm going to be mentoring his wife.
Mentoring means designated gutter and dragger. 😂

Mentoring means designated gutter and dragger. 😂 Funny. We had a young woman in camp that shot her first deer Sunday. An 8 point. I was back at camp working on dinner for the crew and heard it on the radio so decided to head out to the stand to take part in the celebration. By the time I got there the entire hunting party was standing around staring at the deer. It was probably 45 minutes after the shot. It started to sprinkle and I said well, we better get it gutted and out of here before it rains harder. Everybody stood around and looked at me, lol. I said who has the sharpest knife and went to work. I should have stayed at camp............... I would have thought the young lady and her dad would have wanted to field dress their first deer together.

I think if Kelly gets one today or tomorrow, she will have the knife, and I will be assisting. They have raised about 120 chickens the last two years, and she has cleaned most of them.
If it's daylight, and we have time, she will do it. As for the dragging, I got the sled, and she can have a hand in that as well

Everyday I don't get a deer I tell myself "well at least I don't have to gut or drag anything"

Everyday I don't get a deer I tell myself "well at least I don't have to gut or drag anything" There is always an upside. Yesterday I went back to where I shot my buck, just to watch down that steep cut and the three log trails below. I didn't need the gun to do that, but maybe a coyote would wander past. It was just a peaceful four hours on the mountain

One of the best purchases I ever made was the sled to pull deer out on. View Attachment We have one at camp Rip-N-Tear. A great purchase. It makes dragging a whole lot less of a chore.

It didn't go far but it was a few hundred yards from the house along one of our four wheeler trails. I told them I'd walk to the house for the atv. When I got back, both were just standing there. When my son saw the look on my face he said; "Mom told me to wait so you could gut it." I just shook my head, laughed, and pulled out my knife. She has gutted a couple of hers on her own since. She says it's all part of it now, but I did do both of her archery does this fall.

There is "supposed "dressing of an animal, and there is "proper" dressing of an animal. I take great pains to properly dress my harvests. Nothing scream "I don't like game meat" more than an improperly dressed animal. Things I've seen from even guys in my crew, make me shudder. My son is 17 (ya I know, he was a surprise). With his next buck harvest, since he no longer will harvest a doe, I'll stand next to him, and guide him through how to properly dress a deer. He's a fast learner. Until recently, I had no desire to watch him with his arms buried deep up in the cavity with a sharp knife, cutting the esophagus as high as he can reach.

Last year was the first year I tried using gutting gloves when dressing a deer. This year I used them on the three I field dressed. I hope I never gut another deer without wearing them. Just don't leave them in the field with the gut pile...I have seen that done by slobs a few times.

I take them off, inside out, keeping all the blood and stuff inside, then stuff one inside the other. Clean as a whistle when I'm done. Lift the deer into the sled, then lift into the bed of the truck. Not much to clean up after that. I do love the Shappel sled
